  • Randomized Twitter’s Homepage Design

I don’t visit Twitter’s website regularly. I use Twitter from third party applications most of the time. Not sure when Twitter has another new look — the homepage has been changed few times — but when I open Twitter’s homepage, I got some different schemes.

Anyway, you probably remember about its major design few months ago. Now, Twitter randomize its homepage by having different color schemes. Not sure how many combinations it has, I found three. All of them give a short description: “Find out what’s happening, right now, with the people and organizations you care about.”

  • Solved: Nokia N9 can’t connect to Twitter

Posted: November 13th, 2011, 9:22am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

After I had my Nokia N9 early this month, I setup my Twitter account first — after some basic phone settings, of course. Everything worked. The application is probably not the best, but it works.

Is it problem-free app? I thought so, until I got a problem: I can’t connect to Twitter using this app. I was not sure when the problem occurred for the first time. I did played with my phone (installing apps, downloading musics, adjusting settings, and including working from the command line). When an update was available, I also upgraded.

Added later: I was not sure what caused this problem. When I signed-in for the first time, everything worked without any issues. I deleted my Twitter account from the app, and tried to add it again. I forgot when I did this for sure, before or after installing the firmware update. It  was optional, but I decided to upgrade.

2011-11-13 01-49-48At first, I was not sure about the problem. Is it my phone, or the internet connection I was using. I switched to some different connections, but it didn’t solve my problem. When I tapped the “Sign In” button, it said: “Can’t connect to Twitter”.

So, I searched for a solution. And, I got one. It’s probably something too technical, but the instruction is easy to understand. According to the forum thread, here are some steps to fix the problem — I’m using Software Version: PR1.1 (20.2011.40-2_PR_005):

    • Activate “Developer mode” by going to: Settings > Security > Developer mode. It’s OFF by default. Turn it ON.
    • After having it activated, you will find a “Terminal” app button under application menu.
    • Open it and you need to execute these commands (one command per line):
      • gconftool --recursive-unset /system/http_proxy
      • gconftool --recursive-unset /system/proxy
      • gconftool --recursive-unset /system/osso

    You may close your Terminal.

Those commands will wipe your active connection settings (bluetooth and internet data). But, it’s not a problem as I can add/manage connection settings easily. Problem fixed. Great.

  • Google is now indexing Facebook Comments (AJAX/Iframe)

One reason why people avoid using Javascript or iframe is regarding the search engine optimization. Contents presented in Javascript or iframe is not good for search engine, and Google is one of them. But, recently, there is an update from Google about how Google indexes contents presented using these ways (using AJAX/iframe).

    Google’s Matt Cutts confirmed:

Amit Agarwal (Labnol.org) has some an example about  how Google indexing Facebook Comments at Techcrunch. Facebook Comments is an example. There are some other commenting services like Disqus (I use Disqus for my blog) or Intense Debate. Great.

  • Google+ is now available for Google Apps Accounts

Posted: November 2nd, 2011, 7:51pm WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

Finally, Google Apps users now can have the full access to Google+ service. Previously, if you’re using Google App for your domain, you need to migrate to other Google account to get the service. I did that already. But now, Google made it available for Google Apps user.

    Quoting from Google Enterprise blog:

Starting now you can manually turn on Google+ for your organization. Once Google+ is turned on, your users will just need to sign up at google.com/+ to get started. For customers who use Google Apps for Business or the free version of Google Apps and who have chosen to automatically enable new services, Google+ will automatically become available to all of your users over the next several days.*

Google Apps users will have access to the same set of features that are available to every Google+ user, and more. In addition to sharing publicly or with your circles, you’ll also have the option to share with everyone in your organization, even if you haven’t added all of those people to a circle.

I don’t use Google+ on daily basis. And since I’m already linked my other Google account to Google+, I am not sure what I need to do with my current Google Apps account. Here are some screenshots about the registration/activation processes.

If you’re already logging in to your Google Apps account from your internet browser — opening an email for example — you can directly go to plus.google.com or google.com/+

Since Google+ needs Picasa Web Albums for photo sharing and Google Talk for chat, you need to link it to you existing Picasa Web Albums.

Next, you will be prompted to add people to your circles. Google+ already has some suggestions. You can skip this step if you want.

Google+ thinks that you want to follow public posts from interesting and famous people, including celebrities. If you don’t want to follow them, just skip to next page.

Since I didn’t add anyone into my circles, I’m considered as “lonely”. :)

And, my Google+ page with Google Apps service is ready. I currently keep this account (under Google Apps) inactive for now by not adding people to my circles. I will go with my other account that already running.

  • Flickr: Photo Sharing or Photo Storage Service?

Posted: November 1st, 2011, 4:21pm WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

If you read this blog, or meet me in person, you probably know me as Flickr fan. Yes, among services owned by Yahoo!, Flickr is one of my favorite. I have friends who love to use Flickr and also bring some people to Flickr. So far, they’re enjoying it. Well, at least I heard some positive feedbacks from them. Some friends also bought/renewed their Flickr Pro account and they asked me to buy them Flickr gifts.

But, it’s 2011 now. Many photography-related services flourish. To refresh your memories, let’s take a look at 500px, Instagram, or picplz for example. And, I’m sure more to come to the game.

    Butterfly

I asked myself recently: How do I use Flickr? Is it as photo sharing, or simply as a photo storage service? You can find out a bit about how I use Flickr by watching a short presentation during Yahoo! Community Town Hall few months ago. With many other options to share photos these days (again, mind the word “share”) here, I feel that Flickr is more photo storage for me. I do actively share and upload photos to Flickr. But, it’s not only about having photos uploaded there. It’s also about social web interaction.

The magic feature: Share to Flickr

Look at some applications/services that put photos as its primary contents. Many of them has “Share to Flickr” feature. Photos are shared to Flickr directly. Easily. But, where the discussion takes place? Is it on Flickr? May be not.

    The way people enjoy photos

06052011315A simple question: how do you enjoy Flickr photos? There are some ways: visiting the website from the desktop, from Flickr mobile version, or using mobile applications. Even I have Flickr for iPhone, I rarely enjoying the photostream. I feel that it’s not something I’m enjoying. Try to fire up your Flickr for iPhone apps, and experience yourself. If you have your photos delivered to many services e.g. Instagram, Twitpic, and Flickr, I am sure Flickr is not the first site you (or your friends) will visit. Except you make your photos exclusively uploaded to Flickr and share the links to social networks.

It does not seem that simple though. For example: If I share a photo from Flickr to Twitter, Twitter will display the image right away. Some Twitter applications are smart enough to display the shared links as photo thumbnails and photos with bigger dimension. Will they visit Flickr — and exploring my photostream? Probably. But, I think most of them won’t.

I might sound selfish here by expecting other people to explore my photos. But, you know what I’m talking about here, right?

    Shoot, share, and interact

People take photos using many devices, from simple to advanced tools. Using mobile phone or expensive DSLR cameras with fancy lenses. And, to upload the photos, there are some ways too: send directly from mobile devices, by email, or using another social network services and put Flickr as the last destination. Some people still love doing the traditional way: transfer the photo from memory card to laptop/computer, and upload them manually. I still do this sometime.

Again, what happen when the photos are stored to Flickr? Is it easy to interact with the photos? Of course, it’s easy. But, is it super easy? People might to go to Flickr for some reasons: they want to browse their photos or their friends’, or because some photos are made exclusively available at Flickr. Look at White House for example, or NASA. Or, because special event photos are displayed there at Flickr. People will go there. I will go there. But, for personal collection, or just simply “because I don’t want to loose these” photos, Flickr might be a great place to store them. When I need it, I will go there.

This is challenging. It might be a big challenge for Flickr and many other services out there. Innovations and strategies are designed to answer this kind of need. Some services come with an idea and unique approaches. So does Flickr, I think.

I might be wrong here, but from a personal perspective — as a Flickr user — I feel like using Flickr as photo storage service now. Something Flickr does not expect.

  • Sample Photos: Here are picplz filters in action

Posted: October 15th, 2011, 8:16pm WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

Instagram got its popularity these days. It’s exclussively available only for Phone, iPad, and iPod touch users. Just to remind you, Instagram got its 150,000,000 photos uploaded to the service last August. Also, Klout made Instagram as one of the Klout score factors.

There are some similar services offer what Instagram offers, for example Streamzoo, Shnap and picplz. They might not exactly the same, but they share some similar features. I use Instagram as my primary mobile photography activity. I’m still using Flickr anyway and even Instagram — picplz has this feature too — offers direct upload to Flickr, I decided not to use it.

As I said earlier, I use Instagram. I’ve tried picplz too. You probably love the way how you edit your photos using filters provided by Instagram, or picplz. picplz offers some filters and I think they’re great. I want to show you some picplz filters in action here. And, these are some basic information about technical condition:

    • Taken using iPhone 4 (using iOS 5)
    • I use picplz (Version 1.7.1) for iPhone

In this following photos (with filters), I use a photo taken using iPhone 4 camera without any image editing. Here’s the original photo.

Before sending a photo to picplz, you can manipulate it with some filters like “Russian Toy Camera”, “The 70s”, “Little Plastic Lens”, “High Contrast Monochrome”, and more. When I tested, there are 17 different filters. Most of them are just another filter variations, by having “border” and “no border” filters. Of course, you can send your photos edited by external photo editing applications on your phone and send it to picplz.

I only did some basic actions:

    •  Import photo from Camera Roll to picplz
    • Apply a filter
    • Send it directly to picplz (and to Flickr so that I can embed it to this article)
    • Photos sent in “Highest quality” setting

Now, take your time to see picplz photo filters. This article has some pages so that you don’t need to upload all photos in one page. Just use the navigation at the bottom of the article.

  • Flickr for iPhone: Timestamp problem?

Posted: October 12th, 2011, 6:42am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

I am not sure when this kind of problem appeared for the first time. Not exactly a big problem, but something that does not work well. I’m now using Flickr for iPhone Version 1.4.2 on iPhone 4 (Software Version: 4.3.5), and so far the primary feature — I consider photo upload feature as primary feature here — works well. At least, it helps me a lot to upload photos taken using my iPhone directly to Flickr.

I know, there are some other methods that I use like transferring photos using Image Capture or iPhoto to my laptop and upload them using Flickr Uploadr. I almost never use Email-to-Flickr feature.

    Okey, back to the problem.

When I go to “Activity” tab, I see that there are some activities on uploaded photos (new comments, favorited, and added to gallery by other users). But, there is a single activity that should not be there. The latest activity should be on the top — and I think this is what Flickr (for iPhone) exactly want to have. You can see “655 days ago” there. It is a valid activity, and I’ve checked from the web browser.

So, I tweeted about this small issue. I’m not sure how many other Flickr users out there who have the same issue. Karen Yeo (Hi Karen!) came with an idea to re-authorize the application. I did it, but I think I need to be more patient to have it fixed. Is it an issue on the application? Not sure.

    I’ll wait.

    Update: Oct 13, 2011 04:56 PM (GMT+7)

I’m still curious. I’m now with iOS 5 now. So, I just tried a different approach to see how whether it solved the problem or not.

I logged in using my other account and liked my own photo to see whether the “old activity” disappeared or not — considering that they’re displayed by date/time. It didn’t.

I decided not to use it.

I’m using about.me service to create my personal splash page. You can see mine at about.me/thomasarie. It looks good, and very useful to display multiple online profiles like Twitter, Facebook, or even Instagram. Everything works great.

Few days ago, about.me users received an email informing about an offer to get more personalized email address. Yes, another mail service! Last May, Nokia did the same step by powering its mail service called Ovi Mail using Yahoo! Mail features. Since about.me is now part of AOL family, you will get AOL Mail-powered email. Just a reminder: AOL bought about.me back in December 2010.

I claimed my email address. Yes, I have now thomasarie [at] about.me, powered by AOL. If you want to get yours,  authenticate yourself at about.me website, and you should see “Offer” menu under “Dashboard” menu on the top navigation.

The setup was easy. You only need to give your date of birth information. I use Google Mail — Google Apps for domain — as my primary email service right now. I also keep my Yahoo! Mail account checked on regular basis. They offer a good service until today. AOL Mail did offers some features, but I haven’t found any features other mail services don’t have. So, I decided not to use it. If you send your email to thomasarie [at] about.me, it will go to my inbox. But, I’m not sure whether I check it regularly or not.

And, this is how the the email frontpage looks like. Sorry, I just need ‘email’.

If you like to analyze influence using a service called Klout — or, you like to analyze your own Klout score — this might be a good news. Klout just added five new services to build (hopefully) better scoring. You can now add services like Tumblr, Instagram, Blogger.com, Flickr and Last.fm.

The additional services try to cover popular services for blogging, photo sharing and also audio. Those services make internet users become more connected each other.

I’m curious whether other popular services like WordPress, Smugmug and Google Plus will be added there or not. Google Plus does not have its API right now. Okey, we’ll see. How’s your Klout score?

Last year, YouTube introduced its new video player design, and I decided to use it before it was released for public. Now, YouTube has another new player design. This time, it’s dark.

The next question is: Do you like it? Do I like it? The dark element can add more contrast, but when I want to include YouTube videos on my blog and dark element does not meet my website design, that might be a problem. Well, not a problem actually, but when light player is much better, probably black is not an option.

  • Instagram now received more than 150,000,000 photos!

Posted: August 4th, 2011, 8:33pm WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

Instagram announced another milestone yesterday on their blog:

Today, we’re excited to announce that more than 150 million photos have been shared on Instagram and Instagrammers now share photos with one another at a rate of 15 photos per second.

And, it only took less than a year to hit that impressive statistics! And, I never had a chance to have Instagram-experience. Should I get an iPhone? Errr…

Anyway, this is the 150,000,000th photo posted to Instagram:

What about other similar service like Yahoo! Flickr or Smugmug? Even they’re not identical services and probably reach different users, it’s still interesting to read the statistics.

Flickr — owned by Yahoo! — just got its 5,000,000,000 last year. Yahoo! bought Flickr in March 2005. That’s right, it was six years ago. I don’t know exactly how many photos sent to Flickr per day, but it seems that Flickr got less photos — considering the photo sharing services and their simplicity these days. Well, correct me if I’m wrong on this matter.

Another photo sharing service is Smugmug. It’s not that big, but it seems that Smugmug has many happy users. If we look at the service profile, there are more than 1,400,000,000 photos uploaded. Smugmug was launched in November 2002.

And, last but not least, there is also 500px. Not sure about the exact photo statistics, but last week update posted on 500px blogs can give you some hints. According to the website statistics: “500px.com passed 4 million visits in the last 30 days, 35 million pageviews and 1.9 million unique visitors”.

Finally, Twitter users are now able to have Twitter’s interface in Bahasa Indonesia! Indonesia is available as the 11th languages options. I think this is  a good move since Twitter is getting more popular in Indonesia. According to the statistics last year, Indonesia was the top contributing countries after the United States and Japan. And, both languages (Dutch and Bahasa Indonesia) are the first languages translated by the community through Twitter Translation Center.

For a complete list, Twitter is now available in: Portuguese, Bahasa Indonesia, Italian, Spanish, Turkish, English, Korean, French, Dutch, Russian, German, Japanese. You can choose the language settings from Account menu tab.

    From Ovi blog:

    1. You can see where you are on the map, thanks to HTML5 support for positioning
    2. You can find addresses, businesses and other places of interest, anywhere in the world
    3. You can get to know the places: all the essential information about a place are presented on one page (pictures, user reviews, popular travel guides description, contact information)
    4. You can plan the fastest route to your destination by car or on foot
    5. You can see where the public transport lines go, and where the stops are
    6. You can share your favourite places with your friends via SMS, email, Facebook or Twitter

  • Floating CSS menu on YouTube Flash Videos

Posted: July 24th, 2011, 10:05am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

I currently involve in a website project that put videos as its primary contents. My involvement is not primary on the design. I’m just helping a little. What I like from the process is to find solution. One of the problem is on the navigation menu. It’s very common to have navigation with sub-menus. Without having special objects like flash, everything should be under control. But, not this time.

    The problem

When embedding a video from YouTube (in this case, using the iframe method), the navigation is broken because it sits behind the video. The same result with the old embed code. See the screenshot below:

It’s wrong. The menu should be displayed above the video. It should be like the image below:

So, is there a simple way to fix this problem? Yes.

    The solution

The solution is pretty easy. You only need to add a parameter for the embed code. It’s wmode=transparent. I will use an example here. This is an embed code from Serabi Solo video at YouTube:

    <iframe width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Gi-lO8OMUns" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The code above should me modified by adding wmode=transparent parameter. The final code will be like this:

    <iframe width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Gi-lO8OMUns?wmode=transparent" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

It’s easy, right? But, what if you want to use the old embed code? You can fix the problem using a same method. For example, this is YouTube’s old embed code from the same video:

    <object width="560" height="349">
    <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Gi-lO8OMUns?version=3&amp;hl=en_US"></param>
    <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param>
    <param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param>
    <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Gi-lO8OMUns?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="349" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed>
    </object>

    You need to add a parameter. Just add <param name="wmode" value="transparent" />.

The final code will be like this:

    <object width="560" height="349">
    <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Gi-lO8OMUns?version=3&amp;hl=en_US"></param>
    <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param>
    <param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param>
    <param name="wmode" value="transparent" />
    <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Gi-lO8OMUns?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="349" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed>
    </object>

    Have fun!

  • Twitter received 200 millions tweets per day

Posted: July 1st, 2011, 8:32pm WIT by Thomas Arie

Twitter just announced another milestone. According to the statistics, Twitter users are sending 200 millions tweets per day. Yes, it’s bigger than some country populations like Japan, Russia, or even Brazil!

Halfway through 2011, users on Twitter are now sending 200 million Tweets per day. For context on the speed of Twitter’s growth, in January of 2009, users sent two million Tweets a day, and one year ago they posted 65 million a day. [source]

Twitter also have a visualization on the number. So, if:

    • a single tweet consists of 25 words in average,
    • War and Peace book has 1,225 pages and 500 words per page

Then, 24,500 tweets is equal to a single copy of War and Peace. And 200 millions tweets is  approximately equal to 8,163 copies of War and Peace book.

  • Reminder: Google Apps Free Edition Will Support 10 User Accounts

Posted: June 17th, 2011, 10:31pm WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

This news was sent by Google in April 2011. But, I think I have to keep this info also for myself. In short: There are only ten accounts created under a single Google Apps Free account (previously, we can have up to 50 accounts). In last April, Google Apps account holder should received an email from Google Apps Team informing this changes. Yes, I got some too — since I maintain some accounts using Google Apps:

We recently announced upcoming changes to the maximum number of users for Google Apps. We want to let you know that, as a current customer, the changes will not affect you.

As of May 10, any organization that signs up for a new account will be required to use the paid Google Apps for Business product in order to create more than 10 users. We honor our commitment to all existing customers and will allow you to add more than 10 users to your account for ___________.com at no additional charge, based on the limit in place when you joined us.

This new policy will work for accounts created after May 10, 2011. It will not affect existing accounts (created before this new policy). Google offers some flexible pricing scheme. Google for Business pricing and features:

    • $5/user account/month OR $50 / user account / year
    • 25 GB of email storage/account

I myself only have less than five users under my Google Apps account. Considering the features, I think the pricing scheme is still reasonable.

  • Yahoo! Now powers Ovi Mail

Posted: May 27th, 2011, 6:22pm WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

I just got a notification from Ovi Mail — it’s an email service provided by Nokia — telling that Ovi Mail is now using Yahoo! Mail technology. The email said:

Ovi Mail is now officially “Powered by Yahoo!”. Users have access to significant improvements, including better social integration, improved contacts management, a more customizable experience, and better search and spam filters.

I tried to logged-in to my Ovi Mail account, and found that it has now the same look, just like what Yahoo! Mail has. But of course, it has Ovi Mai’s identities there like its logo and menu icons on the top. The image logo now only has the word “Mail”, not “Ovi Mail”. (click to enlarge)

You probably heard the news this month that Nokia in in the process of re-branding, by dropping the “Ovi” and simply use “Nokia”

“We have made the decision to change our service branding from Ovi to Nokia. By centralizing our services identity under one brand, not two, we will reinforce the powerful master brand of Nokia and unify our brand architecture — while continuing to deliver compellingopportunities and experiences for partners and consumers alike.” Nokia’s EVP and Chief Marketing Officer, Jerri DeVard [source]

So, how does it affect the users? Nokia clearly stated that Ovi will not be used in the future — I like its name, anyway. So, other product like Ovi Maps and Ovi Store will be “Nokia Maps” and “Nokia Store”, right? Ovi Mail is using @ovi.com domain, will Nokia keep this, or will terminate the service also? I don’t know. Right now, Ovi is just like regular Yahoo! Mail. I haven’t found any reasons to use it as my other primary e-mail.

  • Yahoo! Flickr’s new landing page

Posted: May 18th, 2011, 12:06am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

When did the last time you visit Yahoo! Flickr homepage? If you visit flickr.com, it has a new look and I think it displays more information. The new landing page will be visible only for non-logged in users.

Compared to the previous one, here are few things I noticed:

    • You will see bigger rotating photos and not only one. Notice the sliding effect there. Some members give their opinion about how photos are displayed. Read the feedbacks at Yahoo! Flickr blog.
    • Since this is made especially for new users, the new landing page gives more details on the top features. By this, I think users will not need to go to the Tour page to get some reasons to create an account.
    • Less photo statistics. Previously, the page gave some numbers like how many photos uploaded in the last one minute, how many photos tagged with a certain tag, and also how many geo-tagged photos uploaded in a certain period — within a month? I’m not sure. All these numbers are gone now. I’m not sure whether the information displayed previously was real-time statistics or not.

The current design does not seem trying to sell its Flickr Pro features. But of course, the Flickr Pro feature is something that probably-purchased by existing users. So, get more users first, and when they found the service great and useful, they might want to upgrade their accounts.

And, there are 8 links to the account creation page. I counted and found 8 links. Or, more? Let me add one here: Create a Flickr account now. :D

Congrats Yahoo! Flickr for the new design. I rarely visit the frontpage, anyway.

  • Display more than 30 sets per page on Flickr

Posted: May 11th, 2011, 4:55pm WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

If you actively upload your photos to Flickr, you probably find that having lots of sets is a good idea. How many sets you have on your Flickr photostream right now? I have more than 200 sets. By default, if you browse sets in a photostream profile, you will only have 30 sets per page.

Flickr does not offer an option to have more than 30 sets per page when displaying photo sets. Yes, there is a paging navigation. But, is it possible to have more than 30 sets per page? Let’s say 100 sets per page? It’s possible.

What you need to do is adding a query string in the URL. For example: My Flickr photo sets URL is http://flickr.com/photos/orangescale/sets/. It will give me a list of 30 sets per page. Now, put ?per_page=60 (you can modify the number if you want). So, it becomes like this: http://flickr.com/photos/orangescale/sets/?per_page=60. Now, there are 60 sets in a single page.

  • Dear Flickr, I just want to buy a Flickr gift

Posted: May 1st, 2011, 7:30am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

But, it seems that something is broken.

Today, a friend contacted me to help him getting a Flickr Pro by activating a Flickr gift. This is not the first time for me purchasing Flickr gifts. Everything worked. Just worked. But, not today.

So, I wanted to buy my 11th Flickr gift — yes, 11th!. I went into what Flickr called “Place your order” page. I hit that blue “OK, I’M READY TO PAY” button. After that I was redirected to another login form for another authentication process. Sure, part of the security checking processes, right? I gave my password and nothing happened. Okey, may be it’s my web browser — even I was sure that nothing was wrong with my browser. The other browsers gave me the same results. It didn’t work. Okey, I waited.

Then, I tried again. But, I got a another respond. It was a message like this:

Sorry, Unable to process request at this time — error 999.

Unfortunately we are unable to process your request at this time. This error is usually temporary. Please try again later.

If you continue to experience this error, it may be caused by one of the following:

    • You may want to scan your system for spyware and viruses, as they may interfere with your ability to connect to Yahoo!. For detailed information on spyware and virus protection, please visit the Yahoo! Security Center.
    • This problem may be due to unusual network activity coming from your Internet Service Provider. We recommend that you report this problem to them.

While this error is usually temporary, if it continues and the above solutions don’t resolve your problem, please let us know.

Okey. I’ll wait. Yes, it’s weekend, and it was midnight. Dear Yahoo! — or Flickr — could you please fix that? My friend just want to have his Flickr account upgraded. Thank you.

[Added later]: This issue had been solved. It seemed that there was something wrong with the payment gateway issue. My friend bought a Flickr Pro gift for himself. :)

Twitter just got its homepage redesigned (again). Here’s its new look.

It’s wider now and display less elements. Previously, there was a scrolling trending topics and some tweet stream. We can’t find them anymore now. I think the new designs tries to attract more people to join (increasing registrations) by simplifying the registration process. The login box is now clearly displayed. Nice.

Anyway, it has different “blue”. I rarely open Twitter website and use using Twitter client like Echofon, Gravity or Twitter for BlackBerry. If you’re using the website version and choose “New Twitter” design, the new design is like preparing to welcome all users to “New Twitter”. Time to say good bye to “Old Twitter” design?

Got this news from Ivan Lanin’s tweet.

Finally, YouTube is now available in Bahasa Indonesia. Yes, Bahasa Indonesia! Last December, Flickr also introduced its Bahasa Indonesia language interface. When I checked YouTube’s blog, I didn’t see any announcements about this, but if you go to [www.youtube.com] or [youtube.com] (link via @lowrobb), you can have YouTube presented in Bahasa Indonesia. You can also switch your the language interface from the link at the bottom of the page.

I checked some pages randomly, and found that the translations are pretty good. Any funny or incorrect translations? Maybe. :)

I have some blog posts about Yahoo!’s MyBlogLog service. In December 2007, MyBlogLog introduced an integration with Yahoo! ID. In July 2008, MyBlogLog introduced its new design. But, I think I don’t have any “real” advantage having MyBlogLog installed on my blog. I can’t remember when I have it installed.

Maybe, you heard the news also that MyBlogLog will close its door on May 2011. I got an email from them.

You have been identified as a customer of Yahoo! MyBlogLog. We will officially discontinue Yahoo! MyBlogLog effective May 24, 2011. Your agreement with Yahoo!, to the extent that it applies to the Yahoo! MyBlogLog, will terminate on May 24, 2011.

If you’re a paid costumer — I’m curious about how many paid customers, anyway — you’ll get refund for unused subscription period. Yahoo! offers another alternative called Yahoo! Pulse — it’s not a new service, by the way — which I don’t use it at this moment. So… good bye MyBlogLog.

  • Gravity Photo Upload Error: XL Problem?

Posted: January 27th, 2011, 9:01pm WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

I have been using Gravity for more than a year and so far, I find that this is the best Twitter client for Symbian. I have it installed on my Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and N8. Using Gravity, it’s easy to share photos directly to some photo sharing providers like Twitpic, yfrog, img.ly, or even Flickr. Sound good? Yes.

But, it’s only when your mobile internet provider works without any issues. Until today, I only use two mobile internet service: Telkomsel and XL Axiata. Using Telkomsel, I almost found no problems. Everything is working. Well, not 100% great, but it’s still acceptable. Right now, I use XL internet service. I just want to try its service. Both offer the similar price for its data plan. XL has more offers when purchasing the mobile internet package.

The problem is — again, this is related to Gravity application — everytime I upload a photo, I always got Error: HTTP 401. Telkomsel didn’t give this kind of error. So, is it an issue from XL’s side? Maybe.

    Wikipedia says:

    401 Unauthorized
Similar to 403 Forbidden, but specifically for use when authentication is possible but has failed or not yet been provided. The response must include a WWW-Authenticate header field containing a challenge applicable to the requested resource. See Basic access authentication and Digest access authentication.

    Not good.

When I tweeted this problem, my friend Andrayogi also shared a same experience. So far, I’m happy with the internet performance by XL. Yes, I have been using XL service for almost 10 years. And this is the first time I use its ‘unlimited’ data plan. If this problem remains unsolved, I think I will be switching back to Telkomsel.

Finally, Flickr is now available in Bahasa Indonesia. If you visit Flickr’s website, you should see “Bahasa Indonesia” in footer area. Click on it and you will see Flickr in Bahasa Indonesia. And not only that, Flickr’s blog seems to be available also in Bahasa Indonesia. But, until today, it only has one post. I’m curious to see upcoming posts, at least more photos about Indonesia there. :)

    AFF Suzuki Cup 2010

How does it affect those who wants to use Flickr, especially potential users from Indonesia? A lot! In the last few years, I met some people who finally joined Flickr (some of them are using Flickr Pro accounts) after getting enough information. They asked me some basic questions like Flickr features, some reasons why Flickr is the best options among photo sharing providers, etc. In most cases, they finally go with Flickr after having enough details about this service (from me). Right now, there are school, goverment and personal accounts I brought to Twitter Flickr from Indonesia. My high school even has more than 14,000 photos! I don’t work for Flickr, and I don’t mind giving some details to them. By having all information in Bahasa Indonesia (from the interface, FAQ, even the upgrade page!), it should be lots easier for them to learn about the service. Nice!

I decided to switch the commenting system for this blog, from WordPress’ built-in commenting system feature to DISQUS. I was not sure which hosted service I wanted to use — DISQUS and Intense Debate came into consideration. Here are some reasons why I use external commenting system service right now:

    • DISQUS provides integration with other services like Twitter, Facebook and also OpenID. This features can be activated on WordPress-powered blogs using plugins. But, if DISQUS already has this feature, why not?
    • DISQUS also offers spam filter mechanism. I’m tired of spam. Akismet and TypePad Antispam plugin did a great job. Right now, I rely on DISQUS spam filter. And I have Akismet activated also.
    • I’m happy with how DISQUS display blog comments. Options can be managed directly from the dashboard.

The migration process was easy. It took less than 30 minutes to import all my comments (there were around 3,100 comments), and I got zero problem. It just worked.

  • Flickr says Hello to Google Account!

Oke, this is what you need to know right now: You don’t need to have/use Yahoo! ID to join Flickr. That’s right. Today, Flickr allows new signup using Google Account.

With dozens of different login usernames and passwords out there on the Interwebs, who needs to add yet another one to the list? To help solve this, Flickr is rolling out a new feature to make it easier than ever for new users to join our community. We’re introducing OpenID on Flickr, a service that makes it faster and easier to sign-up for new accounts by letting you use one identity across multiple websites. So starting today, you’ll be able to use a Google account to sign-up for a new Flickr account. [source]

I just tried it, and it works. Also, Flickr simplifies the login process. Previously, if you’re on a single photo page, and you want to give comment, clicking the “Sign-in” link will bring to to another page. Now, you can sign-in without leaving the page. Yahoo! works really hard these days. :D

Anyway, I’m on Flickr too of course. :D

I haven’t used this Flickr’s “People you may know” feature yet. If you’re using Flickr, you will see another box there on the sidebar giving you some contact suggestions. It seems Yahoo! wants to make Flickr more social these days.

As a Flickr user, I can find also find friends based on their data on my “contact page” at another services like Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, Windows Live and also Facebook. Looks nice? Maybe. Flickr will search all contacts that already inserted in the address book. But, it will depends on how I organize my address book, for example in my Yahoo! Mail or Gmail. My Yahoo! Mail assigned for my Flickr account almost has no contacts. It’s simply because I created a Yahoo! account only to signup with Flickr. So, almost nobody in my Yahoo! contact.

What about Gmail? Similar situation I think. Most of my contacts in my Gmail account uses non-Yahoo! email services. So, when I tried to use the search feature, it gave me an empty results. Windows Live and Facebook give the same output I think.

This is one benefit of having Google Apps for Business for big companies (or when a service involving big numbers of users). Wyoming will save Wyoming taxpayers $1 million annually by moving all state government employees to Google Apps for Government.

The decision to go Google was the result of a transparent and competitive evaluation process that began roughly two years ago. The state estimates the move to Google Apps will save Wyoming taxpayers $1 million annually. [source]

Virgin America will move its 1,700 employees corporate email to Gmail and expect to save system costs by about half.

Over the next two weeks, all of the airline’s 1,700 employees based across North America will be moving their corporate email to Gmail, and collaborating more efficiently using Google Calendar, Google Docs and Google Talk. Their migration to Gmail will cut Virgin America’s email system costs by about half on an annual basis, in addition to the long-term storage benefits where the move into the Google cloud will save them over 18 terabytes of space as the airline continue to grow and add employees. • Things You Need to Know: Import VOX-powered Blog to Posterous

Posted: September 9th, 2010, 8:18am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

If you have heard  the news about VOX and you haven’t decided which service you want to use for your VOX blog, this post might be useful (I hope) for you. Since I use Posterous and it offers an import mechanism, I gave it a try. Let’s make this post short by having some key points. Anyway, you can stop reading this post if you want a brief process provided by Six Apart. This post is based on my personal observation.

I assume that you already have a Posterous account. If you don’t, you can sign up for free. Go to VOX-to-Posterous import page at [posterous.com], and enter your blog URL at VOX.

Follow the instruction, and you will have your posts imported. Finished? Almost. Your posts will be available from your Posterous dashboard page.

They’re all imported, but not yet published. You need to do few more things. If you already have a blog under your Posterous account (note: you can have multiple blogs from a single account) you can merge the imported posts there. If not, just create a new blog, and merge them there. You will not loose your imported posts even you don’t assign them directly. Your imported posts will be assigned automatically in a temporary blog URL. Something like this: import-ppvf-wlzd.posterous.com. Rather than importing to my existing blog, I decided to create a new one.

Everything seemed work well. But, I found few things:

    • Comments are not imported. If you have an active discussion in your VOX blog, this is something you expect not to happen.
    • Inline images in posts are displayed and imported. The imported images are only what displayed in the original posts. For example, if you put thumbnails, only the thumbnails will be imported.
    • Every imported posts will have a kind of footer text. This area will display the original URL at VOX and a send-to-friend link (also linked to VOX page).
    • If you have tags in your posts, they’re not imported.

Overall, Posterous import system works well. I haven’t tried to import to Typepad or WordPress, so I can’t tell you the best service to deal with this import process.

I don’t use Google Maps on daily basis. Now, it offers a short URL for map location link (reference). Now, compare this:

  • YouTube Embed with New Player Design

Posted: May 30th, 2010, 4:52am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

In my previous post, I mentioned about YouTube’s new player design. Right now, it only works on YouTube site — not for videos embed externally. But, with a small modification on its player parameter, we can have the new player design for the video. Example? This is the original embed code:

    <object width="560" height="340">
    <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/XdQxtQFfxiM&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0"></param>
    <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param>
    <param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param>
    <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/XdQxtQFfxiM&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed>
    </object>

Now, look at the this line of code:

    http://www.youtube.com/v/XdQxtQFfxiM&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0

To have the video inserted using a new player design, just put version=3 parameter there. So, it will be like this:

    http://www.youtube.com/v/XdQxtQFfxiM&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0&version=3

You will have YouTube video displayed like what you see below. Of course, you can still modify out it looks using another player parameters.

I personally like the new player design. So, I modified all video codes used at my videoblog to have the new look. It didn’t take much time since I replaced the codes using search and replace plugin. :)

  • Flickr Photo Upload using Gravity? This is good!

I have Gravity installed on my Nokia 5800 XM mobile phone, and so far this is one of my favorite application. If you’re not familiar with Gravity, it’s a Twitter client for S60 platform. It also support Foursquare, Facebook and also Google Reader. Very nice! It’s not free, but it’s not expensive also — I bought it for less than US$10. You only need to purchase a license once.

Today, Jan Ole Suhr (Gravity developer) tweeted an update and he put a link to his Flickr photo page. Right now, I’m using Gravity version 1.30 build 6501. Gravity already support direct photo upload to some services like Twitpic, MobyPicture, Yfrog and also img.ly. But, seeing the screenshot above, it will support Flickr also. Yes, this is good since I use Flickr. Now, waiting for an update.

  • Yahoo Maps powered by Ovi Maps. And more!

Posted: May 25th, 2010, 10:28am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

Some of you probably have heard about this news: Nokia and Yahoo! have an agreement to work on they really’re really good at. According to the press release:

Today, Yahoo! and Nokia announced a worldwide strategic alliance to extend the reach of their industry leading online services and offer people rich experiences that keep them connected to their world and the world around them.

Building on more than five years of collaboration, Nokia and Yahoo! ® will leverage each others’ strengths in e-mail, instant messaging and maps and navigation services, to provide consumers with access to world-class experiences on both PC and mobile devices.

You can also find the press release at Yahoo! Yodel Anecdotal. So, what does it mean for you? Probably… nothing. But, for me it means something. Let me tell you why.

I use Flickr — and I’m really enjoying it. Sometime, I take advantage of its geo-location feature. I can put my photos into map. You can do it manually, or automatically using geo-location meta data captured from your mobile device. I did it using my mobile device. Flickr photos with geo-location information will be integrated with Yahoo! Map. You can see my Flickr map page to see it in action. Is it good? Yes, but not that good. Why?

    • When I had my photos with location information, they’re not placed at the correct information. So, I have to edit their location in the map.
    • Yahoo! Map does not have much details about my hometown, Jogjakarta. Especially, when it comes to street names. For example, my photo taken in Malioboro Street, it’s detected as it was taken in other area, and it’s not even close.
    • I remembered that I have put my photos into correct location. But for some reasons — I don’t know why — the location was changed. I hope I’m wrong with this. The zoom effect or something, I don’t know.

With the new partnership I mention above, I hope I can see improvements. Ovi Maps has a great database of location, and it works really well. I know, sometime it has some mistakes on the street naming, but… still, it’s a great tool.

Good news from Facebook after they bright Facebook Lite offline. There is 0.facebook.com now. According to the announcement:

Yet when using the mobile internet, people around the world face two main challenges–sometimes the experience is too slow to be fun and the cost of data plans and understanding them can be daunting. We have designed 0.facebook.com to help solve these two barriers and we hope that even more people will discover the mobile Internet with Facebook as a result.

Since this site focuses on speed, the design looks very simple, of course. For Facebook users in Indonesia, there are three mobile operators supporting this site: 3, AXIS and Telkomsel. Well, I’m using XL Axiata right now and I think it’s not cheap.

I’m using Google Calendar, but not under my Gmail account. I use it under Google Apps service. Right now, if you use use Google Calendar under Gmail account, you should have a new look.

After signing-in, I was greeted with this message:

We’ve updated Google Calendar to make it more consistent with other Google Apps. Everything works the same as before, with one exception: we’ve removed the Tasks link. Now to turn tasks on and off, just click the Tasks calendar in your calendar list.

It’s more polished now. Look at the screenshot below (Click to enlarge)

Now, let’s compare with the “old” one — Google Calendar design for Google Apps domain I’m having right now.

In most cases, Google Apps for domain service will have the same features (including design) with primary accounts under Google account. I think, I just need to wait. The new design looks better.

  • Have You Checked Your Facebook Privacy Settings (One More Time)?

Posted: May 18th, 2010, 9:17am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

I’m using Facebook, and I really want to take my profile privacy settings seriously. I mean, this is my account and I want to have every settings (especially related to privacy) are correct. I know, it’s something personal. Some people also think that privacy is dead. You can have your own settings. I think more people does not really care about this. Well, not that they don’t care, but it’s more about ignoring it. No?

I just found a tool (hat tip: Read Write Web) to check my Facebook privacy settings. This tool will help me — and you, too — to check one more time about my privacy settings. This tool can be found at ReclaimPrivacy.org. What does this tool do? When you’re using this tool:

You will see a series of privacy scans that inspect your privacy settings and warn you about settings that might be unexpectedly public.

So, it’s a web-based tool. You don’t have to download any software. Just use the simple bookmarklet there. About the result, you can follow the advisory, or ignore it. I checked mine, and I got this (based on my current privacy settings):

    It says:

    • insecure: Instant Personalization is is currently sharing personal information with non-Facebook websites.
    • good: all of your personal information is at restricted to your friends or closer
    • good: all of your contact information is at restricted to your friends or closer
    • good: all of your friends, tags, and connections information is at restricted to your friends or closer
    • insecure: your friends can accidentally share your personal information.
    • good: you have blocked all known applications that could leak your personal information

I didn’t ignore this and I wanted to make sure about the settings marked as “insecure”. Did I adjust the “insecure” settings? Yes, but not all of them. I left one of the advisory settings without any changes. The most important things is: I’ve decided to use Facebook, and understand the risks.

  • Twitter Improves Trending Topic Algorithm, Bye Bieber

Posted: May 15th, 2010, 7:07pm WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

In the last few weeks, I (and lots of people) noticed that Justin Beiber was becoming on the Twitter trending topic list. But, not now. For Bieber’s fans, of course this was something cool. For lots of people, it might be something they didn’t care about. Other people also thought that it should be removed. Recently Twitter changed its trending topic algorithm.

The new algorithm identifies topics that are immediately popular, rather than topics that have been popular for a while or on a daily basis, to help people discover the “most breaking” news stories from across the world. (We had previously built in this ‘emergent’ algorithm for all local trends, described below.) We think that trending topics which capture the hottest emerging trends and topics of discussion on Twitter are the most interesting. While this is very much a work in progress, with this tweak we have taken a big step toward capturing how trends quickly emerge and grow on Twitter.  We also think it’s compelling to know what the “most popular” topics are, and we will look to capture this in some way in the future.
Source: Twitter Help Source: About Trending Topic.

Like what I wrote in the first paragraph, it’s interesting to see what Bieber’s fans think about this. :)

  • YouTube Now Has a New Player Design?

Posted: April 29th, 2010, 6:16am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

I just visited dadio.tv channel on YouTube, I saw something different with the video player design. Looking at the new design in brief, I think I like the new one — all the player elements are there without any significant changes. I’m not sure whether it’s already announced or not, but it’s new for me. Here’s a new video player on YouTube.

And, this is the previous design:

Compared to the previous video player design, here are few things to notice:

    • It’s more polished, I think.
    • But, I’m a little bit annoyed by the frame “Seek” bar there, it covers some video area. It’s only displayed for few seconds and it becomes a tiny indicator.
    • Volume indicator is displayed horizontally. Both designs are fine, but I prefer the volume indicator on the right, not left.

This new player design is only visible when you visit videos directly on YouTube. If you embed YouTube videos in your site/blog, they’re still using the old one. Maybe later.

If you haven’t tried Posterous, you should. It offers lots of great features. Recently, Posterous added a new feature on its theme. If you open Posterous-powered sites using mobile device, they will be presented in a nice interface. You don’t have to tweak any settings, it just works.

    From their blog:

This mobile theme was designed with readability in mind. We stripped out as much as we possibly could, and ended up with a very minimal mobile theme that we think you’re going to love.

In addition, we optimize all of your uploaded media for smaller screens! We automatically resize your image galleries and videos so that viewers on smaller screens can have the best experience possible.

When I create a new post using Posterous, I also cross-post it to Twitter, or — sometime — Facebook. By this new feature, those who use Twitter in mobile don’t have to worry about loading heavy page on Posterous. Nice.

  • Amazon CloudFront has an edge location in Singapore

Today, I got an email from Amazon informing about new location of Amazon CloudFront. Now, it has a new location in Singapore. Previously, Amazon only has its CloudFront server located in Tokyo and Hongkong. Here’s the news delivered in the email:

Starting immediately, Amazon CloudFront will begin using the Singapore edge location for requests for your content. There’s no need for you to change anything in order for this to happen — Amazon CloudFront will automatically route requests for your content to the Singapore location when it’s appropriate to do so. Prices for content delivered from the Singapore location are the same as prices for content delivered from Hong Kong; you can see these at http://aws.amazon.com/cloudfront.

Is it a good news? Of course! About the prices, content delivered from Singapore location has the same prices like from Hongkong: $0.190 per GB — first 10 TB / month data transfer out and $0.012 per 10,000 GET requests. Compared with Europe or US prices, it’s a little bit higher ($0.150 per GB – first 10TB / month data transfer out). But still, the price is still reasonable.

  • Will you downgrade your Flickr Pro account?

A simple answer: You can, but it might be a bad decision.

This month, I renewed my Flickr Pro account for another one year. The main reason is that I already have more than 6,000 photos. If you use Flickr and you’ve upgraded — and also have hundreds or maybe thousands of photos — I think you have two options: renew or leave your license.

I have to agree with what Matt said about this:

My Flickr Pro account is about to expire, I don’t really see any value in renewing it, and I’m also pissed off they only show the latest 200 photos for free members, which means if I don’t pay a $25 ransom more than 800 photos going back to the year 2003 (6 years!) are going to be hidden from the world. That sucks.

But, he is lucky since he has the solution for his problem. But, I don’t think I can do the same. For me, $25/year is still reasonable. Downloading all photos and move them somewhere? Not an easy job.

Few days ago, when I went to Kalibata Street and Pasar Minggu, I also made some videos. Yesterday, all videos were ready to upload. My plan was to upload them to Vimeo, not blip.tv or YouTube. Reason? No personal reason. I uploaded using browser in classic mode.

But, it did not work. When it was about to finish, the upload page brought me to http://settings/. I asked this to Vimeo Staff. They gave me a link for a solution. Then, I pushed my luck by giving Vimeo Desktop Uploader a try.

    And, it worked!

I think I’ll use this uploader as my primary tool when I upload my videos to Vimeo.

Among various Twitter applications available, I only use Echofon. I also check Twitter’s website regularly when checking updates from my list, follow/unfollow other people and some other activities that can be done from the website. Of course, there some Twitter text commands I can use.

Twitter made some changes on its website recently. Some of you might witness it, too. Here are few things I found since yesterday until today.

The update button now says “Tweet”. Previously, it was “Update”. Hmm.. any change the word “Tweet” included in the dictionary? Or, is it already there? And for the update notification, the background color is now light blue, not yellow.

Other actions like following/unfollowing, blocking should be easier now. Just put your mouse on the username and a nice popup will come out. This work also on the avatar. The menus provided will be based on your ‘relationship’ with the users — whether you’re following them or not. See screenshots below:

  • Automatic WordPress Backup (to Amazon S3)

Posted: January 3rd, 2010, 11:13am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

Today, I tried another WordPress plugin called “Automatic WordPress Backup”. This plugin will help blog owners to create backup remotely to Amazon S3 service. Since I’m using it and pretty satisfied with the billing usage, I installed it at some WordPress-powered blogs I maintain.

I use one of the available buckets under my account. For this bucket, I set its ACL (Access Control List) to private, of course. After this plugin installed and activated, I only needed to put my Access Key ID and Secret Access Key.

I decided not to include all files for my backup. I only need the database and uploaded contents. After the settings were saved, I simply hit the backup button. The process depends on the disk and database usage. I found that it was pretty fast. One of my backup files was around 300 MB, and it only took less than 5 minutes to complete the process. Also, the backup file was compressed. This should be useful to cut the usage process as you only need to store a single file for each backup.

The backup files will be automatically delivered to my Amazon S3 bucket and when the process completed, I can see the backup history. To download the backup, I only need to click on the backup links.

The backup links are built using pre-signed URLs so that only the account holder (or someone who knows the URLs) can download them.

In last September, I started to use Amazon S3 for some experimental purposes. And, it’s not that difficult — of course, I only use some basic action. CloudBerry Explorer and S3Fox are really helpful. Now, if you want to know the billing calculation — just in case you’re interested to try Amazon S3 (also with CloudFront), I have uploaded a sample billing statement from Amazon (click the thumbnail to enlarge).

For me, I think the price is still reasonable. Anyway, CloudFront service is optional. Of course, this billing statement is not only based on my blog usage. I have multiple sites and accounts there. Not all of my backup files are also available for public.

Now, I want to introduce another Posterous-powered blog. This time, there are more than one author — well, only two anyway. It’s called Capture and Share. I created this blog as a place to put my — and Lala — mobile streams. All posts in this blog are created using mobile devices (Nokia N78 and Nokia 5800 XpressMusic). But, not all of them are directly uploaded from the devices. Why? Well, we’re not using unlimited internet package for our devices. :)

Why Posterous? Because it just works. Sending photos, videos, screenshots from email is our option. And, Posterous handles this perfectly. Here are few things about the setup:

    • We use custom domain feature. It’s mobile.orangescale.com
    • Some theme modifications. Yes, we use custom theme, only adding few lines in the stylesheet
    • Created this Posterous blog as/with Group Profile

Of course, I will not leave my own Posterous page. So, meet Capture and Share at [mobile.orangescale.com].

I have been using Yahoo! Messenger for few years, and I got a problem using it yesterday. The error dialog box gave me message like this:

There was a problem signing you in to Yahoo! Messenger.
Your account has been locked. Please click “Forgot Password…” to start the unlocking process.  (81003003)

    ym81003003

The problem was that I used it few hours before and everything was right. I’m using Yahoo! Messenger 10.0.0.1102-us. So, I tried to logged in to my Yahoo! account. Username and password combination did not work. Not good. I was sure that I put correct details. I tried again. And, it worked! And, when I went back to my Yahoo! Messenger and tried to log in, everything was back to normal. OK, there was a little problem there. Not sure what it was, but it’s fine now.

  • Google Mail Labs: Inserting images

I just enabled one of Google Mail Labs features. It’s “Inserting images” feature. What is it?

Allows you to insert images into a message body. You can upload and insert image files in your computer, or insert images by URLs. This lab will not work if you have offline enabled.

If you’re using Google Mail — I’m using Google Apps for domain, anyway — you can visit Google Labs page directly from your mail dashboard. The menu is at the upper right. Scroll down there to choose which labs features you want to activate.

    glab_insert_image

Now, if you write an email in Rich Text format, you should see a new icon there. Click on the icon and you can choose the image you want to insert in your email. You can upload it first, or using a remote image address.

    glab_insert_image_re

But, why did I enable this feature? For a simple reason: it helps me dealing with Posterous. Creating a new post by email to my Posterous page should be easier now.

  • Posterous’ New Dashboard

    TagsServices

Right now, I only have an active Posterous-powered site. But, if you manage multiple posterous sites, you should love the improvements. Posterous introduced a new dashboard interface. This is a page where you can manage your Posterous sites easier. In September, Posterous already introduced some features. Now, you have more reasons to start using Posterous.

    Posterous' Dashboard

I like the changes anyway. The navigation help its users to identify the current active site they’re managing. Also, the new design is easier to navigate. All site-related menus are placed in a tab-style navigation.

The other additional menus are presented below. Previously, I think it was not easy to find the “Theme Settings”, now it’s clearly visible there. Great job, Posterous!

Also, if someone subscribe to your Posterous sites, they should get the new posts faster as Posterous now works together with PubSubHubbub.

In addition, we’ve just added support for PubSubHubbub with the help of our friends at Superfeedr. For everyone, this will mean your posts will appear in Google Reader much faster, as they’re gradually rolling out PubSubHubbub support. This is in addition to our SUP realtime support that we added to make your posts show up in FriendFeed even faster. Both SUP and PubSubHubbub are enabled now for all posterous blogs. If you’re a developer and want to take advantage of this, head on over to our PubSubHubbub hub. (source)

    4,000+ Flickr photos

Last year, there were 2,000 photos in my Flickr photostream. And few days ago, I just noticed that I’ve been uploading another 2,000+ photos. So far, I’m satisfied with Flickr service — at least, I never experienced bad service. I bought a new camera few months ago (Canon EOS 450D), and I took more photos using it. The “problem” was that I don’t have too much time to upload many selected photos. This month, I decided to stop my other internet connection — yes, I use two internet providers in the last few months. The reason was simple: it was because I had to cut my internet budget.

I had no problem with my internet connection backup. In fact, I’m really satisfied with the upload speed. The upload speed also helped me working with my videoblog. Right now, I think I consider upload an download speed as “okay”. It’s not super fast. It’s okay. So, I need to be more patient dealing with uploading activity now. I’m using Telkom Speedy now.

Back to Flickr, I just realize that I need to work on the photo “sets” and “collections” management. Right now, I don’t have any “collections” for all my 4,000+ photos. All photos are managed only in “sets”. I’m still finding the best way to manage them.

I don’t know when Flickr rolled out this changes, but I see now that notification email subject about new photos from my Flickr contact is more useful now. Previously, when my contacts uploaded photos to their Flickr photostream, I get notification with subject like this: [Flickr] New items from friends.

Now email subject is something like: [Flickr] New items from {his/her name}. This is more useful because I can see who just uploaded the photos. Information delivered in the email is similar with the previous one, anyway.

  • 10 Reasons Why I Love Posterous

Posted: October 14th, 2009, 8:42am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

After using Posterous in the last few weeks more frequenlty, I feel that I like it more than before. It feels right. These are 10 reasons why I like Posterous — and why you should love it, too.

    1. Email-friendly, of course

One of the internet feature I regularly check is email inbox. Sometime, I want to post something directly from email sent into my inbox. Posterous is about working directly from the email — web-based email or email clients.

    2. Free

It’s a free service. Right now, I have 1 GB of free storage. Since it does not offer types of account (free or paid account), Posterous said that we can have more than 1 GB if we hit the limit. If I have to pay to get more storage or features, I will consider to subscribe. But, I hope it offers the right price/package. And, we can have multiple Posterous sites using a single email address.

    3. Autopost

How many social media accounts I have? How to distribute or send something to those service easily — if I want to share something using those services? The autopost feature is just perfect. I can send photos to Flickr, send videos to YouTube, post something to my own blog. But, I can do them all automagically from Posterous. And, I can choose whether I want to share them directly or not. Or, I can share only to specific targets.

    4. Send and relax

I don’t have to be bothered with editing or customization process like resizing images, upload media files and embed them to my own blog (if I have a self-hosted blog). Posterous handles all emails sent properly. I sent multiple images, they will be displayed as a gallery-like entry. I send an audio files, it will have an embed audio player. For videos sent, they will be displayed in a video player. I sent a YouTube link, it will be transcoded into an embed player. So, it’s like send and forget.

    5. Smart file handling

It’s related to the above reason. Posterous works together — in term of cross-service — with other online services. For example, we can automatically send PDF documents directly to Scribd, but not to my Flickr page. Posterous will recognize uploaded files — as long as we integrate Scribd with our Posterous account.

    6. Personalized domain/website address

I can have a personalized domain for my Posteorus page. Right now, my Posterous site is posterous.orangescale.net. So, every photos/images/articles I sent to Posterous will have permanent link with my own domain.

    7. Themeable

If I don’t like the default Posterous site design, I can choose from the available themes, customize them or even create my own theme. There are some limitation, for example we can include JavaScript codes inside our theme or PHP syntax. But, even with the basic theme tags, it should be more than enough — for me. I’m using a customized Posterous site design now.

    8. Multiple authors and emails

This will be useful for a collaborative site. For example, a group of people want to report something together — from different locations. They can have their own email addresses added to a Posterous-powered site and all emails sent from those addresses to Posterous will go to one  (or multiple) Posterous site(s). It depends on the settings.

    9. Subscriptions to email

I subscribe to some Posterous sites, and one thing I like about this is that I can have updates from subscribed site delivered into my inbox. Or, I can simply read them from the subscription page.

    10. I have 9 reasons above :)

The last reasons, I found many useful features I need for now as I mentioned above. Or, this last reason is to complete the list, since I’ve mentioned “10 reasons” in the title? Well, having 9 good reasons is just more than enough. :)

Few weeks ago, I posted a question about media/image sharing provider as Twitter companion. I asked about the better solution between TwitPic or TweetPhoto. Andre Siregar (@dregar) mentioned about using Posterous as the image sharing provider. Right now, I’m enjoying Posterous. Posterous offers many features that are easy to use, especially — of course — when it has something to do with email.

When we share media files (photos/videos) — related to Twitter — the idea is to put the image somewhere in the internet, and broadcast the URL to our Twitter account. Most services offers similar mechanism. And, most of them also have ‘post by email’ feature. Now, I think I will use my Posterous account as my primary service to do this. The main reason is that I like using ’send by email’ feature.

Other reason is about personal preference. Posterous has flexibility on the design. I have made some modifications for my Posterous page. It’s still simple, anyway. Also, Posterous can handle multiple media formats so that it’s not limited to photos/image only, but audio, audio or any other files. If I want to share to Twitter — for example — I can do it easily using Autopost feature, or send it to a certain email address. Nice!

logo_posterousThis September, Posterous blogging service released some new features and improvements. If you’re not familiar with Posterous — or never heard about it before, it’s a service that will help you put something online. You can post text, photos, videos and also documents. The big difference is that you can do it directly from your email. This service was launched back in July 2008. And, this is my Posterous page. If you have a Posterous account but you haven’t logged in for few months — or want to try it, here are some new features:

    Feedburner feed tracking

If someone subscribe to your Posterous RSS feed, you can find out how many feed subscribers you have. This process should be easy because you can integrate your feed to Feedburner account. Using this, you can use all Feedburner’s features.

    Autopost to Scribd

Posterous offers auto post ability. Using this, you can send your posts from Posterous to different websites/service. If you send a document, you can deliver it directly to Scribd.

    Themes and Custom Themes!

If you want to have your own custom look for your Posterous page, you can do it easily now. There are some themes available. Once you select your theme, you can do some modifications  like colors, custom image header, etc. If you’re good at HTML and CSS, and want to create your very own theme, an advanced customization feature is also available. For some people — at least for me — this is a killer feature!

Embed songs from Lala.com and videos from Viddler and Google Video

If you want to embed audio files from Lala.com and videos from Viddler and Google Video, you don’t have to deal with embed codes. Just put the links, and Posterous will do the rest for you.

  • Using CloudBerry Explorer to Manage Amazon S3 Account

Posted: September 24th, 2009, 10:52am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

In my previous post, I mentioned an Amazon S3 tool called CloudBerry S3 Explorer. I also have S3Fox organizer addon installed. I use them both, and I feel that I’m more comfortable with CloudBerry Explorer.

CloudBerry Explorer makes managing files in Amazon S3 storage EASY. By providing a user interface to Amazon S3 accounts, files, and buckets, CloudBerry lets you manage your files on cloud just as you would on your own local computer. (source)

Now, I want to share how I use CloudBerry S3 Explorer to manage my Amazon S3 Account.

CloudBerry Explorer is availble as a freeware software. We can download it for free. It offers many features we need to manage Amazon S3 account, from a simple to complicated tasks. After I downloaded and installed it, I can start using it. First, I need to add my Amazon S3 account into the application. Go to File > Amazon S3 Accounts.

    amazon_s3_cloudberry_add_account

Fill in the fields there. The “Name” field is used as the account identifier, you can put anything you want there. Put your Access Key and Secret Key to the next two fields. You can get both keys from your Amazon S3 control panel under “Security Credentials” menu.

    amazon_s3_cloudberry_select_accountt

After that, I can connect to my Amazon S3 account by selecting the account from the menu. Anyway, the account settings can be modified later by going to the account management settings and choose “Edit”.

After that I’m connected to my Amazon S3 account, on the root folder. There’s nothing there — because I haven’t added any buckets there. Hint: The folder on the root directory is a bucket.

    Creating Amazon S3 Bucket

To create a new bucket, just click on the “New Bucket” icon. Choose your bucket name wisely. For example, I created a bucket called “orangebox”. After the bucket created, you should check its permission. Right-click on the bucket name, and choose ACL > ACL Settings. If you want you bucket available for everyone (public), just click on the “Public (everyone” button.

    Bucket ACL

    Uploading Files

Now, I’m ready to upload my files to my bucket. If you’re familiar with any FTP client, it should be easy. You can drag and drop from the other pane. Every uploaded file has HTTP Header values. More information about HTTP Headers can be read at CloudBerry blog entry. The next question: how to get the link for the uploaded files? Easy. Right-click on the image, and choose “Web URL”.

File Distribution, CloudFront, and Custom Address

Amazon offers an optional service related to S3 (Simple Storage Service) called Amazon CloudFront. If you think Amazon S3 is more than enough, This is optional to use the CloudFront. What is Amazon CloudFront? “In Amazon CloudFront, your objects are organized into distributions. A distribution specifies the location of the original version of your objects. A distribution has a unique CloudFront.net domain name (e.g. abc123.cloudfront.net) that you can use to reference your objects through the network of edge locations.” (source)

In simple definition: Place the files in different location so that users will get the files from the nearest location (shortest route). More details: Distribute Your Content With Amazon CloudFront.

    Amazon CloudFront

To enable the distribution, you should subscribe to the service. The process is similar like when you subscribe to Amazon S3 service. It’s also using “pay what you use” scenario. So, if you use both services, you will have two billing invoices. Because I’m doing an experiment here, I decided to subscribe to it.

Click on the “Distribution” menu icon to start. Check the “Enable Distribution” checkbox. I want to enable a custom address like: http://orangebox.orangescale.net/photo.jpg — all files under orangebox.orangescale.net will be served by Amazon. So, on the “CNAME” field, I put “orangebox.orangescale.net” (without quotes). Now, I go to my DNS Management — it’s not related to Amazon. And add a CNAME record. If you get the “Web URL”, now you should see options for CNAME values. You need to wait for a moment to get the custom CNAME record fully active.

Anyway, I saw a note about the software. It is said that “Freeware version, Expires on…”. I asked CloudBerry Lab team, and got an answer from Andy of CloudBerry Lab. And, this was his answer:

As for the expiration we want you to stay on the latest and the greatest version of CloudBerry Explorer and that’s why we expire it every once in a while to force you to download the newer version. All you have to do is to go to our website and download a new one. It is still free. All your settings will stay intact. I hope it shed some light on the expiration issue.

So far, I like how CloudBerry Explorer works with my Amazon S3 and CloudFront Explorer account. If you need an application to manage your S3 account, you can try CloudBerry Explorer.

PS: I write this post based on my personal use and understanding about Amazon S3, CloudFront and CloudBerry. CloudBerry Lab does not pay me for this. It’s not a paid review.

    Amazon Web Service Logo

After I signed up for Amazon S3 and CloudFront last week, I started to use it right away. Before that, I tried to get as many information as possible. It seemed easy. I had to deal with some new words like “bucket“, “Access Key ID“, and also “Secret Access Key“.

Amazon S3 — just like its name — is a storage service. What makes it different from “storage” in webhosting is that there is no FTP access. But, the mechanism of “moving your data to a storage server” is similar to FTP. In FTP, we will connect to your server using some basic information like hostname, username and password. In some cases, we will need an FTP port. And we can do it easily using FTP clients like Filezilla, CrossFTP,  WinSCP, etc.

    amazons3_keyid

Amazon S3 uses a little bit different process. Just imagine “Access Key ID” as “username”, and “Server Access Key” as the FTP password. Both information are generated by the system and they’re not easy to remember.

    Amazon S3 Bucket

To keep our files and folders organized, we can separate your files into different folders. The word “bucket” is like the same with “folder”. The folders in root directory of your Amazon S3 are the buckets. But, those folders have some different behavior. Here are some details before we create our buckets:

    • Bucket names can only contain lowercase letters, numbers, periods and dashes. And, they should be started with a letter or number.
    • Bucket names must be at least 3 characters long.
    • Bucket names can not be in an IP address style. For example, you can’t have 192.168.0.1 as your bucket name.
    • Bucket names can’t be renamed.
    • You can only create 100 buckets in your Amazon S3 account.

If we put your “picture.jpg” in “bucketname“, we can access your file using http://bucketname.s3.amazonaws.com/picture.jpg or http://s3.amazonaws.com/bucketname/picture.jpg. More details about Amazon S3 bucket can be found at the documentation page.

Upload files to Amazon S3 account

We have an Amazon S3 account, an access key, and secret access key. The first thing we need to do is to find tools to upload/transfer our files. There are many applications we can use, here are some:

Those are two tools I have right now, you can find your favorite tools. So far, they just work great. Useful! The first thing we need to do is creating a new bucket. After that, check its permission. To have your buckets accessible for everyone you need to modify its ACL (Access Control List).

    amazons3_acl

I only use a basic setting. I everyone can open all files under a certain bucket. So, I give everyone a “read” permission. We can modify the access list at any time, not only for the bucket but also for other folders and files under it.

    Amazon Web Service Logo

In the last two days, I was working on an experiment to use Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon CloudFront together with WordPress. It’s not primary for my blog, but for my friend. There are many tutorials and good recommendation on this. Since my friend using WordPress as the publishing platform, and it is easy to integrate with S3 and CloudFront, I gave it a try. But, what is Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3)?

Amazon S3 provides a simple web services interface that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web. It gives any developer access to the same highly scalable, reliable, fast, inexpensive data storage infrastructure that Amazon uses to run its own global network of web sites. The service aims to maximize benefits of scale and to pass those benefits on to developers. (from Amazon S3 website)

Actually, using Amazon S3 might be just fine. Since I want to make experiment, I decided to subscribe to Amazon CloudFront, too.

Amazon CloudFront delivers your content using a global network of edge locations. Requests for your objects are automatically routed to the nearest edge location, so content is delivered with the best possible performance. Amazon CloudFront works seamlessly with Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) which durably stores the original, definitive versions of your files. Like other Amazon Web Services, there are no contracts or monthly commitments for using Amazon CloudFront — you pay only for as much or as little content as you actually deliver through the service. (from Amazon CloudFront website)

This is my first attempt using those two service. The subscription is easy. Create an account at Amazon, fill in the billing information, and start subscribing. That’s all. After few attempts, I finally have it working. I hope it’s working without any issues. Anyway, for WordPress integration, I use Amazon S3 for WordPress plugin. Let’s wait until the end of the month to get the billing statement.

I know some points about actions on Facebook related to friend requests. Facebook has some more detailed notes about this. Here are some points:

    • Hitting the “Ignore” button will remove the request from our request list. Users who want to add you as friend will not be notified. They can send friend request again.
    • Users in your “Request list” can’t send another friend request (to you).

  • Beware of those ‘get more followers’ services!

Posted: July 20th, 2009, 2:40pm WIT by Thomas Arie
    Tagsaccountsecurity password twitter Services

Recently, I see many updates in my Twitter timeline containing updates about that so called “get more free followers”. The idea is to encourage you to join a service that will boost your number of followers. Sounds familiar? A simple question: what does those number mean (for me)? What do I want to prove by having hundreds or thousand followers? Nothing.

    leather and washer key chain

If you try to find service like this, you will find many. They share some common characteristics:

    • Ask you to login to their websites, it means you give your Twitter username and password.
    • Sometime, they ask you to follow more people and give you new followers.
    • And then… the worst part is that they will send updates from your account.

If you’re aware that there’s something wrong with this practice, you can stop doing this. But, if you don’t check Twitter regularly, don’t be surprised if you flood your timeline with those rubbish. Also, you will flood people with useless updates, too. This happens usually because you don’t know when and how those services updates your account. Remember, you gave them permission to access your account when you started using them.

Few weeks ago, I saw one one people I follow used a service like this. His account sent updates few times a day. Not sure about the frequency, but he had more than ten updates promoting the service. And, it seemed that he did not login to his account during that time. What happened next? He got his Twitter account suspended. OK, probably I had a wrong conclusion, but I couldn’t find any other reasons about the suspension.

Personally, I always spend few minutes reading about the service using Twitter login mechanism. I try to get some basic information, e.g:

    • Login method — Twitter already has a standard secure recommendation. Your login information will not be stored to services’ server.
    • Privacy statement — Even they don’t have lengthy paragraph about this, but you should read and understand it.
    • Read more about the service. How the services deal with your login? What will they do with it?
    • Last but not least — well, it’s my personal preference — do you really need the service?

    UPDATE (added later):

Here are some websites that you provide what so called “get more followers” AND you’d better be careful!

tweeterfollow.com and tweeteradder.com — Both are using the same rules. They will ask you to follow other users first, and will give you new followers as “reward”. Here’s what a user experienced:

tweeterfollow.com was sending messages from my username, so I closed my account with them and then changed my Twitter password. Now I’m locked out of Twitter…it tells me I am trying to login too many times with the wrong password. I assume this is because tweeterfollow is still trying to tweet on my account?! Ugh!! (story source)

There is another story about tweeteradder.com, and from Twitter’s Get Satisfaction forum.

There are another services here twitter-train.com and twittertrain.info, but their websites are suspended by the hosting provider already.

    Collins

Twitter’s popularity increases very fast among the other microblogging application these days. You already know that in 2004, Merriam-Webster dictionary included the word “blog” as Merriam-Webster’s #1 Word of the Year for 2004. Blog is defined as:

[short for Weblog] (1999) : a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer

Back to Twitter, it has gained academic respectability with inclusion in the Collins English Dictionary:

The entry under noun will read: “a website where people can post short messages about their current activities” and under verb it will read: “to write short messages on the Twitter website”.

The word Twitterati, referring to users of the website, will also be entered, as will Twitterverse, which defines the website and its users.

  • How to get your suspended Twitter account back?

Posted: July 16th, 2009, 2:51pm WIT by Thomas Arie
    Tagsaccount twitter Services

    twitter_req

Today, I got my Twitter account suspended. I’m still not sure why, but it seemed because Twitter mistakenly suspended my account. I was a little bit panic, but I believed that there was a solution for this situation. I just hoped that Twitter listened and did something on my issue. Of course, I was only one of hundreds, or thousands, or maybe millions of users who got such problem (at that moment).

To make the story short, I finally got my account un-suspended in two hours or less. So, what did I do to get my account back?

Being suspended, it does not mean that you don’t have access to your Twitter account. When my status was suspended, I could still login to Twitter. I could see the timeline updates from people I follow. Being suspended means that I can’t change any data, it’s like being in “read-only” mode. If you think you don’t do any illegal activities (see Twitter rules), and you want to have your account back, just do the standard procedure.

The first thing I did was filling a ticket, explaining the situation. I also mentioned about the situation I wrote in my blog. I was not sure whether the information was useful or not, but at least I provide more details.

Few minutes after that, I was happy because my ticket status marked as “Solved”. Here, “solved” does not mean “Hurray, I get my account back!”. “Solved” also means “assigned to staff”, or “someone had been notified about the issue”.

I did not want to flood the staff by updating my tickets, asking for an emergency actions. It was around 1 AM (my time), and I could wait until morning, if needed. I was not sure about my ticket status. I also was not sure whether Twitter staff reviewed my request or not. I did not know what happened exactly with account. I just waited for feedback/action from Twitter staff.

I reloaded Twitter page randomly, just to check the status. Suspended, still. And then — after around 2 hours — I had my Twitter account back to normal. I was happy, and checked my ticket status, nothing changed. No comments, no feedbacks, … nothing. I was fine with that. Twitter was probably busy with other issues. The most important thing is that Twitter did something from there. Even if the machine did this, I’m still happy. :)

Lessons learned: it’s fine to be panic but the next things are: don’t panic, follow the procedure, and be patient.

Few minutes ago, Twitter got a problem. Not sure about the real problem, but when I opened Twiter website, it said something about “Over Capacity”. I waited. Probably this was the best thing I could do. Usually, Twitter heals its problem in minutes. And, Twitter was back.

Was the problem solved? I thought so. But, I got a bigger problem. My account was suspended. I was logged in to my account at that time and got a warning message.

    My Twitter

OK, my account was suspended and I got this message (this is a notification for suspended account):

This account is currently suspended and is being investigated due to strange activity. If we have suspended your account mistakenly, please let us know. See Suspended Accounts for more information.

Strange activity? Well, I think I do no strange activities using my Twitter account, and I think my followers know this. Maybe, Twitter suspended my account by mistake. Maybe, the system did it. I’m just unlucky right now. I’ll contact the staff now, and let see how it goes.

Update 2:40 AM: My Twitter is un-suspended. Yay! I’m not sure the exact time, but it took less than two hours to have my issue resolved. Thank you Twitter staff! Will post about this experience later.

There are many tools and applications to work with Twitter, but right now, I use Twitterfox as my primary tool to interact with my Twitter account. I also have some applications installed like Seesmic desktop, DestroyTwitter, and TweetDeck. But, when I start working with my browsers, I rarely open other Twitter desktop client(s).

Seesmic introduced its web-based Twitter client. If you’re using the desktop version, it’s very similar. The web-based version recreates the desktop application. I tried it, and it looks good. The main reason using Twitterfox is because it offers simplicity with very basic features (updates, checking replies/mentioned, and direct message).

So far, my favorite feature of Seeismic (web-based version) is the Gmail-like style. Simple. And, it’s auto-updated, too.

    Tagsemail flickr twitter Services

Today, I tried another Flickr feature. It’s similar to what they have right now — upload by email. The difference is that after the photo uploaded, it will send a notification to Twitter, send an update status. If you’re familiar with Flickr’s Upload by Email, it should not be difficult at all.

First, you have to link your Flickr and Twitter account. Add your Twitter account into your Flickr profile, and do the next authentication process. After that, you should see the integration status (see image below).

    flickrtwitter_oauth

You will have a special email address. Any photos sent to that address will be uploaded to your Flickr and a status update will be broadcasted to your Twitter status. The email address is similar to your regular email you use to upload photos to Flickr (by email). For example, if your private email address is something21rate@photos.flickr.com, your other email will be: something21rate2twitter@photos.flickr.com.

I tried it, and it works without any problem. The photo address will be shorten. (see image below)

I’m not actively using this upload-by-email feature, but it’s something useful and glad Flickr has it.

Few days ago, I installed a toolbar in this site (see footer). It’s a hosted toolbar service from Wibiya. I was not sure whether I really need that or not, but because I got invite to try the service — after asking for invite — I decided to try it.

Go display the toolbar, we only need to customize the toolbar. There are some “application bars” available such as Blog Search, Translation, Posts Navigator, Twitter, Sharing Tool, RSS, Gallery (Flickr), Live Notifications and Community (via Facebook). We can also edit the toolbar color from “Change Toolbar Theme”. There are some toolbar color availble.

I decided not to install all applications because the I did not need some of them this time. The other reason is because of application feature. For example, for the “Gallery” application, we need to provide “Flickr Set ID”. I think I will put this “Gallery” application when Wibiya give me another option to display recent photos from my Flickr photostream. asked about this, and they responded.

It’s not open for public, but if you’re interested just go to Wibiya website and ask for an invite. I got my invitation token in a same day.

    fb_username_available

Facebook introduces Facebook Usernames. And, now it’s available for public. Now, we can create a personalized and easier-to-remember web address for our Facebook profile page. For those who like ’shorter is better’ in URL, this should be interesting. Facebook explains:

Your new Facebook URL is like your personal destination, or home, on the Web. People can enter a Facebook username as a search term on Facebook or a popular search engine like Google, for example, which will make it much easier for people to find friends with common names.

Before choosing a final username, here are few things we might want to know (you can read detailed info on the Help Center), so choose wisely.

    1. Usernames can only contain alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9) or a period (”.”)
    2. Usernames must be at least 5 characters long.

  • Paypal Improves Account Overview and History Pages

Posted: June 4th, 2009, 11:42pm WIT by Thomas Arie

Today, when I logged in to my Paypal account, I see a notification about the improved design for Account Overview and History pages. After reading the details, I went to my Account Overview page.

    Paypal My Account Overview

On the landing page (after logging in), as a buyer I see something what I call “these are information I want to see after getting into the dashboard”. Compared to the previous design, the page presents almost similar details, but the position and design are improved — in my taste.

    Paypal History Page

Paypal balance is more visible now. It helps me to decide whether I want to spend my money, or not. The transaction activity page has some menu and shortcuts to track the history. Finding a trasaction, seeing recent and past activities, filtering by currencies are things that can be done easier. There are also some filter shortcuts.

I think it will be useful if I can see the current currency rate in dashboard — USD to my currency setting. :)

This time, the new design works. It offers solution. Thank you, Paypal!

  • Topify, A Much Better Twitter Notification Email System

Posted: May 13th, 2009, 3:36am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

I think I forgot when I joined (got invitation) to try Topify and started using it. Until now, Topify is really useful. It’s a timesaver! Topify is a simple service that will send notification (by email), and it’s related to Twitter. Two important keywords: Twitter and email account.

Sometime, we got notification from Twitter when other Twitter users start following us. Or, if we receive direct message. Is it good? It is. But, what can we do with the email we receive? What’s next?

Previously Twitter sends email notification in flat text. The notification only provides some basic details like Twitter username, real name, and link to Twitter profile page. The last thing is a link to our Twitter dashboard page to modify the notification settings.

Recently, Twitter provides more details, and it’s in HTML format. It includes these following details when we have a new follower:

    • Link to new follower’s Twitter profile page,
    • Number of followers,
    • Number of updates, and
    • How many people our new follower follows

When we receive a direct message, we will also get information about the sender and link to reply. I use Topify to handle my Twitter-related email notification. And, I’m satisfied. How?

After we connect our Twitter account to Topify service, the fun begins. I got almost a same notification — just like what Twitter sent, but with more details and more useful “what’s-next-thing-you-want-to-do” things. For example, when I get a new follower, Topify will send me an alert with these details:

    • Twitter username and real name
    • Some statistics
    • User’s Twitter profile
    • Last updates

This is how the notification email look like:

    topify

The last feature addition is that the number of followers (and how many people he/she follows) is included in the email subject. How is it useful? For me, to decide whether I must follow or block.

In my previous paragraph, I mentioned about “what’s next”. The email Topify sent is still useful, because we can do some actions directly by replying it to follow back or block (without going to Twitter’s website).

When receiving a direct message, we can reply, unfollow and block the sender directly from email.

Now, if you want to use this service, you can request an invite or go to [bit.ly] to get invites.

I went to Google Trend site to check some statistics. When I choose Indonesia as the location search, Google Trend will give more spesific results based on subregions. I also saw: Risu, Indonesia (see picture).

OK, I’m probably not good in Geography subject. But, I never heard about a city named Risu. May be, it’s there, somewhere in Indonesia. But, I never heard of it. There is Riau.

I asked Google about Risu, Indonesia. Google does not know either and give me a suggestion: riau, indonesia.

Well, let’s see the keyboard, find where “A” and “S” are.

  • Facebook and Friendster in Indonesia

I feel that more people added me as their Facebook contact list these days. And, many of them already added me to other social network site: Friendster. I joined both sites, but I almost never use Friendster in the last few months. I found that Friendster is too boring. I know, it might because I only use some of its feature.

When I visited Friendster, I only checked the friend requests, approve (or simply ignore them). Other than that? Almost nothing.

Few days ago, I looked up Friendster’s Alexa statistics. The traffic goes down — compared to its competitor: Facebook. When I checked both service using Google Trend, I got the similar result.

    fb fs google trend

According to Friendster’s press release in April 2008, Friendster has more than 8 million registered users and 4 million monthly unique visitors to Friendster.com as of February 2008. The press release also said that:

Friendster is the most popular online social network in Indonesia with over 3.9 million weekly unique users, according to analysis of Alexa data as of April 1, 2008. “This makes Friendster more than five times larger than Facebook which has no more than 700,000 unique users each week, and this makes Friendster seven times larger than MySpace which has no more than 530,000 in Indonesia,” said David Jones, vice president of global marketing at Friendster. “As the second largest Web site in Indonesia (second only to Yahoo!) and the No. 1 social network in Indonesia, launching support for Indonesian will help Friendster maintain and extend its leadership position in the country as well as with Indonesians around the world.

On the other hand, Facebook becomes more popular now. According to Facebook demographic statistics, there are already more than 1 million registered users from Indonesia as of February 2009. Let’s see what will happen in the next few months. Should be interesting.

    getty flickr

Last year, Flickr and Getty Images teamed up to build what they called The Flickr Collection on gettyimages.com. It’s available now at [www.gettyimages.com]

What happened behind this collaboration? Flickr General Manager explains:

For the past few months, editors at Getty Images have been busy exploring the Flickrverse to find the right photos to be part of the collection — a task that is somewhat daunting when there are more than three billion images to choose from on Flickr. The goal was to choose photos that created a commercially viable collection, while preserving the inspirational and unexpected nature of the kinds of images that are so prevalent on Flickr. Like Flickr itself, this is a “living collection” and Getty Images will continue to add thousands of new images every month from here on out.

At the Getty Images’ landing site, it’s said that:

These are handpicked images with an originality and authenticity rare in stock photos. Images that are available exclusively on our site, in both rights-managed and royalty-free options.

More photos will be added into the collections.

  • Twitter Search Results on Google Search

I have Greasemonkey installed on my Firefox browser. After I heard the news about inserting Twitter real-time search directly on Google search page, I gave it a try. Visit userscripts.org to get the Greasemonkey script.

What about the results? It seems that this script is useful. Having search results from two different sources: Google and Twitter. Twitter is known for its social search because people really involved in giving answers, solution and other info.

On the other hand, Google has numerous search results — of cours, it’s the search engine. But, who gives the most relevant results? Is it Google, or Twitter? Well, both will give search results only if they find the matching keywords/phrases. Twitter might be more updated because our search is pulled out from its database. Google might not give the best search query results, but it offers more data.

Google might win, Twitter too. Who’s the winner? We decide.

After being a free member at Flickr (again), I noticed that my photostream displays more than three sets. It seems that Flickr has lifted its set limit — for free account. Right now, I can see lots of photo sets. So, what’s the exact number? Flickr writes:

We’ve lifted that limit and you’re now free to organize your most recent 200 photos into as many sets as you like.

Thank you Flickr! In short, it means that — for example — if your last 200 photos are organized into 10 sets, you will have 10 visible sets.

    squirrel-3

Another news is about HD videos support Flickr Pro members. Here are some points to notice:

    • Pro members can upload as many HD videos as they want. I hope I read it right.
    • Free members can only upload 2 videos per month. They can upload HD videos, BUT it will not be displayed in HD quality. If they upgrade to Pro account, the HD version will be available.
    • Video limits still apply: less than 90 seconds and 150MB in size.
    • Check out the new Desktop Uploadr. We can upload photos and videos easier.

I think I want to renew my Pro account membership sooner. :)

I decided to leave my Flickr Pro account expired for some moments. I know, it’s probably not a good decision. What does my Flickr look like right now? What happens to an expired account? At least, I know the answers. Here are few things I found:

    flickr exp 2

    • Flickr free account limits apply now for my account.
    • There are only 200 last photos displayed. But, this number means all your last uploaded photos. For example, if you have 90 private photos — among those 200, unregistered visitors/contact will only see 90. Get the math?
    • Free account can only have 3 sets, right? But, when you were Pro users, and downgraded to free user, you still have more than 3 accounts. I have more than 80 sets (public and private). My Flickr photostream only displays 12 sets, and 17 sets when I logged in.
    • Flickr misses expired Flickr Pro accounts. :)

Okey, will upgrade my Flickr account later since I’m still enjoying videoblogging right now. :)

  • blip.tv Basic Features and Notes You Might Want to Know

Posted: February 25th, 2009, 7:55am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

When Budi Putra visited Jogjakarta last weekend, I was involved in a discussion about a video provider called blip.tv. I’m using it now effectively for my videoblog. We learned about the service, features, and other aspects that we need to know. It was because we wanted to find the video hosting provider that really meet our need. So far, blip.tv works great on my videoblog.

Here are what we found. If you need video hosting provider, and you consider blip.tv, you might want to know these things:

    1. blip.tv offers two types of account: free and pro accounts. The pro account offers many additional features like priority transcode access, transcode to iPod and MP3 formats, longer transcode times, hidden videos, and also timed publishing.
It costs $8/month. If we purchase annually, we will get two extra months for free. blip.tv only accepts Paypal right now.
    2. If we do not want to continue our pro account subscription, some pro features will be removed and all hidden videos will be visible.
    3. There are no video upload limits per day, or weeks. The maximum video size is 1 GB per file.
    4. To upload videos, we can use some alternatives: using web-based uploader, cell phone, FTP or desktop software.
    5. The desktop uploader is called UpperBlip. It is compatible with many operating systems.
    6. By default, our “Show Page” is generated from our username. So, it will be something like this: username.blip.tv. We can have different address for show page URL. Username does not have to be the same with the show page. Show page address can be changed, but not the username. You have to contact blip.tv for this.
    7. blip.tv offers an advertisement program. This is an optional feature. If you don’t want to see any advertisement in your uploaded videos, you can simply disable them from the dashboard.
    8. blip.tv shares 50% of the adjusted gross advertising revenues that are actually received by Blip.tv and generated by user content with the user who uploaded the content. (source)
    9. We can customize the video player. If you want to embed the videos to different sites, we can have a preset to produce desired embed code.
    10. Many ways to distribute the videos e.g. automatic notification post to Twitter, Facebook, delicious, etc.

Of course, there are many other features and information. You can see more from FAQ and Help page. Do not forget also to read its terms of service.

In the next few days, Flickr Pro account I have with Lala will be expired (see our Flickr Photostream). I haven’t decided whether I renew it before or after the expiry date. I am curious about this. About this renewal, Flickr explains:

If your Pro account expires, don’t panic! None of your photos or videos have been deleted!
This means instead of enjoying the super-duper capacity of your Pro account, you’re now subject to the limits of a free account. If you upgrade again, all of your photos will be waiting for you.
Any of your sets that disappeared will magically reappear when you renew or upgrade.

Again, I’m curious about this. There are more than 3,000 photos and 80+ photo sets. Is it really safe to leave it expired to see the effect? I don’t know. The free account only has three sets, which sets will be visible? I’m curious. At the same time, I don’t want to take a risk. We’ll see…

Finally, WordPress now offers a better search engine for its plugin directory. It is using Sphinx right now. But, it does not search plugins by authors and tags. It only reads all information from readme.txt file which is delivered in every plugins uploaded to directory.

Another improvement — well, I think I should call it “feature” — is that WordPress.com is now supporting comment threading feature. This feature is included in the core if you’re using self-hosted WordPress 2.7.1. Since WordPress.com seems already upgrade to the latest version, we can now use this feature also. • Save posts as drafts.
    • Set a post to be published at a specific time.
    • Queue up posts to be published automatically on a configurable interval.

Okey these are useful. There is another new feature about audio-related content. We can post an audio content directly from a phone call. Of course, it uses international rate. Two years ago (woot! two years?) I tried to start a tumblelog. You can read my old post about tumblelog. It was using Movable Type. And, I left it without updates.

Few days ago, I went back to Tumblr and decided to create a tumblelog again. I want to use Tumblr for some reasons: I don’t want to deal with Movable Type, WordPress or Textpattern to create my tumblelog. Not because those platforms can’t do the work, but because I only want to post. Another reason is that I like Tumblr after I tried it for few hours, exploring its features.

So, here’s my new tumblelog, using Tumblr with custom domain name. It’s not mine anyway, because Lala will also post there. I only made some theme modifications — adding Tumblr theme tags and editing sytlesheet and its HTML. The result? It’s here: [tumblelog.orangescale.com]

With Vimeo Plus, we can get these features:

    • 5GB of upload space per week
    • 5000 free HD embed plays with purchase
    • The ability to control which domains can embed in HD
    • 25fps/PAL support for HD (up from 24fps)
    • Make your videos private on Vimeo.com while still able to embed them on your site
    • One-button upgrading of your existing videos to the latest high-quality format without using additional upload space
    • No banner ads
    • Unlimited Groups/Channels/Albums
    • Priority uploading.
    • Full control player customization

All for $59.95/year. For free accounts, I got these features:

    • 500MB of storage per week
    • Standard quality Video
    • 1 HD video per week
    • Basic player customization
    • 1 group, 1 channel and 3 albums

This is very a great offer for those who have many videos in HD quality. All my videos are still in standard quality. Well, only capture video using my mobile phone and digital camera. :)

But, when I have my own video recorder that support HD videos, I might upgrade my account. Anyway, among the video sharing providers, I like Vimeo. I tried to upload a same video to different providers like YouTube, blip.tv and Vimeo. And it seems Vimeo is the best solution for me, right now.

  • About Facebook Connect for WordPress

Posted: January 2nd, 2009, 1:29am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

I installed Facebook Connect as an experiment for this blog last week. With some modifications, it works fine here. If you’re using WordPress and want to try Facebook Connect, here are few things you might need to know. Anyway, I’m using Facebook Connect 0.9.9 plugins for WordPress. It’s recommended to use the latest version. When I write this post, the newest version is 1.0.

When Facebook users are “connected” to your blog, it means:

    • They will be registered to your blog as “Subscriber” in your WordPress system. Some account information — from Facebook — will be inserted. They are “Full name” and Facebook Profile ID.
    • The usernames will be a combination of FB_ prefix with profile ID. So, you will have usernames like these: FB_1015647304, FB_1226611178, FB_678048415, etc.
    • The “Website” field will be their Facebook profile page.
    • Biographical Info will be derived from Facebook profile based on the data at the time they’re connected.
    • Email address will not be inserted as user profile data. Connected users can edit their profile (edit display name, email address, website URL, etc) by signing in to your WordPress Dashboard. This will make them supply their email addresses.
    • Facebook profile images will be used as avatars.

Right now, I have some questions (for myself) about this Facebook Connector plugin.

    • Can they “disconnect” from my blog? I don’t see an option for this. The only thing I can do to “disconnect” them from my blog is by deleting their account in my WordPress system.
    • Some Facebook users have been connected. And then, what? What’s the benefit of being “connected”? I know, it’s like creating a small community for a blog. But, what’s the other benefit?

I will leave Facebook Connect here for now. But, I’m thinking of removing it later. Anyway, Facebook Connector is not a bad plugin. It’s great piece of plugin to make connection between your WordPress-powered blog and Facebook.

Last week, Facebook announced about plugins for Facebook Connect. I saw some sites already using this plugins. Some leading blogging platform like Movable Type and WordPress also have Facebook Connect plugins.

To be more spesific, here is a list of Facebook Connect Plugins available. I’m sure there will be more plugins in the future.

For this blog, I use Sociable, with some modifications — of course. I try to keep it simple. When visitors are not “connected” to this blog, there will be a brief notification. If you’re on a single entry page, and commenting system is enabled, you should see a button to “connect”. In general, the Facebook Connect-related element will be displayed in the sidebar — with the “connection status”. Right now, I’m using it and I hope I can use it for a long period. Because I made some modifications on the Sociable plugin, there might be some minor (I hope!) bugs.

If you only want to test how it works, just sign-in using your Facebook account and get connected to this blog. Anyway, this is my Facebook application page for this blog :)

  • Short URLs to Social Services Using Own Domain and .htaccess Redirection

Posted: December 11th, 2008, 6:19am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

These days, there are many social services we use. I use some of them. Bloggers or websites also provide some links on their blogs/websites to those social service. If links to our profile is easy to remember, that should be great. For example, it’s easy to remember my Flickr photostream using [flickr.com], or Twitter account ([twitter.com]).

But, what about Facebook, Technorati, or LinkedIn? My Facebook profile page is located here: [www.facebook.com]. There is a Facebook application to create more memorable Facebook profile, page or group. They will be something like profile.to/thomasarie or groups.to/AnyGroupName.

Few days ago, @mahadewa and @huda mentioned about this. Anyway, there is .htaccess for redirection. So, why not using it to produce more memorable URLs for our profile? It’s easy. Now, I can have [orangescale.net] (Facebook profile), [orangescale.net] (LinkedIn profile), and more.

Since [added later: I have my own domain name,] my web hosting uses Apache and supports .htaccess, it’s very easy to do it. I just put these lines in my .htaccess (in the root folder).

    Redirect 301 /facebook http://www.facebook.com/people/Thomas-Arie-Setiawan/695771665
    Redirect 301 /flickr http://flickr.com/orangescale
    Redirect 301 /linkedin http://www.linkedin.com/in/thomasarie
    Redirect 301 /openid http://openid.orangescale.net/thomasarie
    Redirect 301 /technorati http://technorati.com/people/technorati/thomasarie

“Redirect 301″ means permanent redirection. You can add as many redirection rules there. Just see the patterns there, pretty easy to understand, right? And, I think it’s easier to remember. It also nice if we use it for our business card :)

I’m still not sure about the release date, but it says “sometime in December 2008“. A Christmas gift? :)

I already use the development version here (WordPress 2.7-RC1-10015), so if you’re interested, here are some screenshots. About new features, navigations, and other new things, please head to WordPress official blog for complete details.

Yesterday, I got an invitation to try OpenX hosted solution beta program. This hosted solution can serve up to 25 million ad impressions per month. If the “free version” is not enough to serve larger traffic, there will be premium hosted packages.

Compared to the self-hosted software, it’s a little bit different. I installed OpenX independently few months ago. I haven’t decided where I will use my OpenX account, but I will.

OpenX, ad management software will offer hosted solution for ad management. Currently, it’s still in beta testing. You can apply for registration.

This should be great because we can outsource the traffic, bandwidth and other resources needed to run an ad management system. Well, there is Google Ad Manager. Which one is better? Still don’t know yet. I’ve signed up for the beta invitation. If you’re interested, just sign up now.

  • vBulletin Performance Optimization

Posted: October 17th, 2008, 3:10am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

I have been dealing with vBulletin for almost a year now. I manage a vBulletin installation for my friend at Fashionese Daily forum. Anyway, Fashionese Daily forum have used other forum/discusion engines like punBB and MyBB. It’s now using vBulletin 3.7.3 Patch Level 1.

It’s a pretty busy-traffic forum anyway. In average, there are 1,000 new posts everyday. According to forum stats, there are 500 - 600 online users during the prime ours (registered and guests). From the very beginning, I try to maintain its performance so that the forum is available.

Based on many articles about vBulletin optimization, here are what I did:

    • Move avatars, profile pictures, attachments and CSS to file system. Make them stored as file, not in database. From vBulletin admin control panel.
      • Avatar and profile pictures settings — Go to: Avatars - Avatar Storage Type. This option was taken because there is no problem with the disk space storage.
      • Attachments — Go to: Attachments - Attachment Storage Type.
      • CSS — Go to: vBulletin Options - vBulletin Options - Style and Language Options.
      • Do not forget to check the directory permission in each path settings.
    • vBulletin has some built-in optimization settings, here are few things to consider (under vBulletion Options - Server Settings and Optimization Options):
      • Update Thread Views Immediately: No
      • Duplicate Search Index Information on Thread Copy?: Yes
      • Use Remote YUI: Yes.
    • Under “Cookies and HTTP Header Options” (in vBulletin Options)
      • GZIP HTML Output: Yes
      • GZIP Compression Level: 1
      • Add No-Cache HTTP Headers: No

There are still many options, if you search using Google — for example, you’ll find many setting suggestions. All settings depend on your server or preferences.

Other than that, there are also some actions taken. Again, this is based on the personal/community preferences:

    • Limit unnecessary queries. For example, I just made the “Current Active users” statistics only availble for Administrators and Moderators.
    • Avatars/user pictuer profiles only visible for logged in members. The same rule for signature.
    • Increase time between searches. This setting can be found under “Message Searching Options”. Also, forum search is not availble for guests.

So far, the forum performance is just great. But of course, that only some methods. Every forum has its own best settings. :)

  • Track Current Stock Information in Google Spreadsheet

I am not a person who got affected when there are major stock changes in the market. But, for those who need to track the stock information growth — and also use Google Spreadsheet, this is probably useful. Anyway, this will retrieve data from Google Finance.

There is a tutorial about tracking stocks in Google Spreadsheets

Instead of copying data into your worksheet, when the linked source changes, the cells in your spreadsheet will automatically update, which can save a lot of work if you pull reports regularly. This external data can be pulled from XML, other spreadsheet documents, and even (assuming you can bear to look) current and historical stock quotes from Google Finance.

Using this method, you can retrieve current stock information and also pull historical stock data. There are some spreadsheet samples you can download.

  • WordPress Troubleshooting: WordPress Admin Area (Dashboard) Redirect Loop

Posted: October 14th, 2008, 8:02am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

Yesterday, I helped one of my clients with her WordPress-powered blogs. When I tried to find the solution — using search engines — I could not find any exact solution.

    Problem overview

Okey, here’s the problem: When I tried to login to WordPress dashboard — not WordPress.com, but self-hosted — I always got these errors:

    Redirect Loop
The browser has stopped trying to retrieve the requested item. The site is redirecting the request in a way that will never complete.

The browser has stopped trying to retrieve the requested item. The site is redirecting the request in a way that will never complete.

    • Have you disabled or blocked cookies required by this site?
    • NOTE: If accepting the site’s cookies does not resolve the problem, it is likely a server configuration issue and not your computer.

I’m not sure what caused this problem. I thought it was my browser (Firefox), but I got the same problem on other browsers.

Server problem? I don’t think so. I have some WordPress installed on the same machine. Here are some technical data about my client’s WordPress installation:

    • WordPress 2.5.1 — When I upgraded from the previous version, it worked without any problems.
    • Plugins should work, but it’s not. I have same plugins installed and mine has more plugins.

Troubleshooting: Disabling plugins, cleared the cookies

Okey, I disabled all installed and active plugins. Because I couldn’t get in to “Dashboard”, I downloaded all plugins, and remove them from server after that. You can disable plugins by moving all plugins (files and directory under “wp-contents/plugins” to other directory. It’s the same.

I also cleared the cookies. If you’re using Firefox, go to Tools > Options > Privacy and click on the “Show Cookies” button. Delete the domain cookies (if any). For Opera, go to Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Cookies. You can delete cookies from the corresponding domains from the dialog box. For Internet Explorer, you can find it somewhere in “Internet Options”. :)

I tried to login again, and still got the problems. Is it because of the older version of WordPress? Probably. So, I took the risk by upgrading it to the latest version: WordPress 2.6.2.

    Troubleshooting: WordPress Upgrade

I just wanted to make sure that I had the database backed up. So, I created backup for the database, and uploaded the new files. It seems that I can directly upgraded my WordPress without going to Dashboard. Once you have your new files uploaded, just visit the Dashboard URL, or simply login to admin area from yourdomain.com/wp-login.php or yourdomain.com/wp-admin/. After the upgrade, everything was back to normal. Great!

The first thing I did after that was to re-upload the previous installed plugins and updated the out-dated plugins. When I went to plugin management page, I got a warning message:

The plugin ../../wp-content/themes/theme_directory_name/header.old has been deactivated due to an error: Invalid plugin.

Okey, there was an error because the themes needed a plugin that did not exist. Luckily, the theme was not active (being used). I simply removed it, and the warning message disappeared. After that, everything worked without any problems. Problems solved. Great!

  • Distribute Media Files Quickly Using Pixelpipe

    TagsServices

Today, Pixelpipe is on open beta. If you haven’t heard about Pixelpipe before, it’s a service that allows us to deliver digital media (pictures, videos, and audio) to many different services. If you have blogs, Twitter (my twitter page), or any text-based services, you probably have heard about Ping.fm. It’s similar, the main different is that Pixelpipe can be used to deliver digital files.

Few weeks ago, I got an invite to try Pixelpipe. I was impressed. It’s easy to use, anyway. Currently there are more than 30 photo/video sharing services available to “pipe”. For example, I can post my photos to Flickr and Nokia OVI at the same time. Or even to Picasa. Just choose and connect other service’s account to your Pixelpipe. We can also post our files to other blog service providers like VOX, LiveJournal, WordPress, etc. As long as the services support your media format, they should — hopefully — work fine.

The uploading process is also simple. What makes it even better is that there are some uploader tools available to download. I’ve tried Pixelpipe Uploadr (Windows), and it works great. It’s similar to Flickr Uploadr.

Okey, signup while it’s hot. Note: It doesn’t have a password reminder feature yet — still in the process?. So, just make sure you remember your password.

  • Dropbox might be your solution for file-sharing need

    TagsServices

Today, I just registered and use a newly open-for-public file-sharing service called Dropbox. That’s right, Dropbox just launched for public few days ago. The first impression: I think I will LOVE it. Here are few features why I think it might be great solution — for me, and I hope for you too. :)

It’s free. But here, free does not mean unlimited. All free account can have up to 2 GB of storage. If you think it’s not enough, other ‘package’ will be available: 50GB for only $9.99/month, or $99.99/year.

Rich of features, but easy to use. I think its design got my attention when I visited the site for the first time. It’s simple and has an easy-to-understand navigation. Some interesting features:

    • Sync contents between your PC with your Dropbox account. But, before you can use all features, you need Dropbox client installed on your computer. The good thing is that its client is available for many platforms: Windows, Linux and also Mac. Anyway, if you visit Dropbox site, you will not see the registration page because the registration is done from the client software. I’ve tried it using Windows XP Home SP2, and it works without any problems.
    • A box for multiple computers. This is good especially if you work on different computers.
    • Access our files anywhere. If we do not have Dropbox client installed, we can access our files using web-based interface. We can also upload new files.
    • Better file management. We can create folders/directories, and set the permission for each files. It means, we can share a file with other friends using a “public” URL.

    Interesting? Try it.

MyBlogLog Blog has some details on this.

Don’t worry, we still got all the features that you can’t live without; your stats, your widgets and, of course, the New With stuff. Only now everything is framed with shiny shadows and rounded edges! Also notice that on your profile we have moved the most recent visitors module, up on top, not down below the fold so you can quickly see who’s been checking you out…

We went and completely upgraded the featured blogs by scrolling through the top 20 sites (based on number of members), and displaying a more straightforward message about what we offer; Discover, Broadcast, and Connect. You’re going to hear these three words more often from us, I’d love to hear if this description it resonates with you.

Overall, compared to the previous design, it’s better.

I have been using Google email service for long time and have a good experience. I feel no limitations about this service. But, does it have limitation-free service? It seems it doesn’t. There is a limitation about sending email using Google email service.

In an effort to fight spam and prevent abuse, Google will temporarily disable your account if you send a message to more than 500 recipients or if you send a large number of undeliverable messages. If you use a POP or IMAP client (Microsoft Outlook or Apple Mail, e.g.), you may only send a message to 100 people at a time. Your account should be re-enabled within 24 hours. (source)

I have been using .id domains for quite long time. And, it has been a year since PANDI hold the domain registration service. Last year, PANDI only accepted domain registration for one year only for each domain. Now, they said that we can register and also renew our existing domains fot two years (read the press release).

My experience with PANDI is nice. I mean, I never got big problem on domain registration. Well, there was a little problem, but it seems they are improving their service. When I registered a domain for my client last few weeks, the only problem was because of incomplete documents. I thought it was fine, but PANDI needed more requirements. I was fine and told my client to send me some other documents. So, basically, as we go with the procedures, it should not be that difficult to get .id domains.

  • It works, and let’s make it better

Posted: May 8th, 2008, 1:40am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsServices

Currently, we’re working on a site. I will tell you about what site it is. This time, I want to share our ideas about how we build it. It comes with a membership features. You know… registration, login and password reminder. For the password reminder feature, the current site — we actually redevelop the current site — has the feature, and it works fine.

BUT, we think that the process can — and should — be improved. Here are the scenario (from the current site) for the password reminder:

    • A user fills in the email field with the his/her account’s email address.
    • The system will generate a randomly-generated password.
    • User can login with the new password.

It works. But, there are some other situations:

    • Other people can see other members’ profile.
    • On the profile page, the email address is revealed (readable).

So, other members can easily bug each other. Of course, only when they want to. The point is: it can be done. If someone put other members’ email adress, he/she can reset the password. “Hey, I have someone changed my password without my permission. I need to change it again now…”

We think that this can be improved. So, we change the process. Not only because many services also use this, but because we believe that it’s better

A user fills in the email field with the his/her account’s email address.
    • The system will generate a confirmation code, and send it to user’s email address. A confirmation link is provided. If he/she wants to change the password, they can follow the link. Otherwise, they can ignore it.
    • Once the password reminder request confirmed, a randomly-generated password will be delivered.
    • User can login with the new password, and change it into more memorable password.

    That’s an idea.

And, it’s not only about sharing pictures with other members, but also related to how we will use the photos.

The “Share This” button will be visible only if we can share the information on the page. So, it is not visible on frontpage since we can not share anything. If we’re seeing a photo — our own photo or other member’s — we can easily tell other people about the photo, embed it into our websites/blogs, get the permalink, or even blog about it from our Flickr account (only if we have blogs assigned into our Flickr account).

Of course, we can not share our private pages like Flickr stats page (for Pro members). And, it depends on the privacy settings we apply to our photos. If we want to share some private photos, we can do it by giving a “Guest Pass” to our friends. Go to Flickr help page about sharing for more info.

After giving more storage for its Gmail users (I have 4 Gb of storage right now), Google starts to give IMAP support. Google Help Center already mentioned about Supported IMAP Client List. But it seems that not all accounts got this feature. I checked both in my Gmail and Google Apps, I still haven't got the options to enable the IMAP settings, only POP.
