  • WordPress 3.3: It looks great!

Posted: December 13th, 2011, 4:08pm WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsDaily

WordPress team just announced that the new version of WordPress is available. It’s WordPress 3.3 “Sonny”. Matt posted some notes about this release. I have WordPress for multi-site installation, and since the previous upgrade went smoothly — except some minor issues — I had no reasons not to upgrade. It was easy, just took few seconds.

I like the way WordPress greets me with useful information. You will get information about new features. You know what your WordPress installation can do. Nice.

I need some more steps to upgrade since my blog is a network-blog. It took only few extra clicks. When I go to post creation page, I got a tiny  tooltip telling an information about what I can get from this installation. The media uploader is improved now. It’s drag-and-drop now. If you have problem, you can still use the basic uploader. And, it also supports additional files (.rar and .7z).

This release is also great for those who wants to start blogging using WordPress because “Help” provides more details about the current page — yes, it’s depending on the context.

If you want to read all details about this WordPress 3.3, go to WordPress Codex. For me, these are some to highlight:

    • Drag-and-Drop Media Uploader
    • Post-update About screen — After upgrading, you know what the new features are.
    • When inserting a Gallery to be ordered by Date/Time use the post_date field for ordering rather than ID

  • How To: Install Opera Mobile on Nokia N9

Posted: November 26th, 2011, 8:17am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsDaily

Nokia N9 already has a built-in internet browser. It’s not the best, but it works. I like having some browsers for my Nokia N9, and currently I have Firefox Mobile and Opera Mobile installed. Both browsers (Firefox Mobile and Opera Mobile) are not available from Ovi Store. If you’re using Symbian for your Nokia, you can download Opera Mini. Firefox is not yet supported.

I’m not considering the installation process as something difficult. Yes, it’s not like the regular installation procedures. It’s my first-time experience too. So far, everything works without any issue at the moment. For Opera Mobile installation, I just follow the installation tutorial from Nokia N9 Fans Club. It’s an unofficial site, not maintained by Nokia.

This is how Opera Mobile looks like on my Nokia N9.

    Opera Mobile on Nokia N9

Now, let me share a bit about how I installed Opera Mobile. Anyway, my N9 is running MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan with software version PR1.1 (20.2011.40-2_PR_005). And, if you’re not familiar with command line, you can continue reading.

    Installation

First, you need to turn Developer mode on by going to “Settings” > “Security” > “Developer mode”. I have done something in Developer mode when I fixed the Twitter app issue about two weeks ago. Don’t worry, it’s safe. :)

Since it’s not officially supported by Opera, you need to download from another source. I downloaded the installation file from My-Meego.com website. You can download directly from your N9 browser, or  from your laptop/PC and transfer it to your phone. I downloaded directly from my phone. It’s around 12 MB.

So, where’s the file? You can find it under /home/user/MyDocs/Downloads/. Its file name is: operamobile_11.11.00-1_armel.deb. It might be different when the new release is available. You can check using application like File Manager or Filebox. You can not install it directly by double-tapping (or opening) the file.

Go to Application screen and open Terminal. You need to work as “root” to get permission to install. By default you’re logged-in as “user”. On the Terminal screen, type “devel-su” (without quotes) and press the Enter button. You will be asked for a password. The default password is “rootme” (without quotes), and press Enter button again.

Great, you’re now working as “root”. (See screenshot)

You need to your Download folder by typing: cd /home/user/MyDocs/Download/ on your Terminal screen, and hit the Enter button.

If you want to see list of files in the directory, just run ls -l and you should see operamobile_11.11.00-1_armel.deb there.

You are ready to install it now.

Type this command: dpkg -i operamobile_11.11.00-1_armel.deb and hit the Enter button. If you’re too lazy to write down the file name, just type dpkg -i opera and hit the “Tab” button there to complete the file name. The installation process only took few  seconds.

When it’s done, you can close the Terminal by typing exit or swiping the screen down. Easy.

    Other notes

    Opera Mobile on Nokia N9

About your User Agent, it will be detected as: “Opera/9.80 (linux armv71; Opera Mobi/10; U; en) Presto/2.7.81 Version/11.00″.

By having Opera Mobile installed, you can expect to have another browsing experience. Opera Mobile offers some great features. Go to Opera website for detailed features. It’s not yet officially available, but it’s running great. On Nokia N9, it only offers a landscape view — no portrait view. The menu button on the bottom right is a little bit not responsive. Sometime it’s slow to open. I tried to browse some websites, and I have a pleasant browsing experiment.

    I love photography.

After using some different cameras (DSLR and phone camera), I think  this year I spend more time using mobile phone, not the DSLR. Sometime, I almost forgot that I still have Canon 450D. After having Nokia N9 in my hands, I wanted to test its camera features, just like what I did with my previous Nokia N8.

Nokia N9 does not have the best camera specifications compared to other mobile phone products (with camera). But, for a mobile photography, the photo quality is pretty good. Let’s look at Nokia N9 camera specifications:

    • 8 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics
    • Wide-angle lens, true 16:9 imaging
    • Large lens aperture F2.2 for better and faster photos in low light conditions
    • Dual LED flash
    • Digital shutter, continuous autofocus, touch-to-focus and exposure lock
    • Focal length: 3.77mm / 28mm, F number/Aperture: F2.2
    • Still images file format: JPEG/EXIF/XMP
    • Digital zoom up to 4x for still images and video

Now, let’s see how some photos taken using Nokia N9. These photos are not edited at all. Nokia N9 has also a simple photo editor to crop, rotate, brightness, and contrast, etc. I only captured some photos, and send to Flickr directly from the phone using built-in upload to Flickr feature.

I got Nokia N9 in my hand this week. You probably have heard about this new Nokia N9 from some sources and I will share a little bit about my first impression about this “All it takes is a swipe” phone. This new phone is available in three different colors: black, cyan, and magenta. I got the black one. You can find the product info at swipe.nokia.com.

    03112011050

    What’s in the box?

When I opened the box, I found that it’s taller than my Nokia N8. But, it seemed slimmer. I compared the dimension with Nokia N8, and yes: it’s a little bit taller but slimmer. It’s 116.5 x 61.2 x 12.1 mm. With the battery included, it’s only 135 grams.

    Nokia N9

It has “Clear Black” AMOLED display with 480 x 854 pixels resolution. When had it in my hands, I found that this phone has no buttons on the front. The only buttons are on the side of the body: Volume (also as zoom key) and Power/Lock key. About the battery it has internal, nonremovable, rechargeable battery.

    Nokia N9

    Body

    Nokia N9

On the top, there are Nokia (3.5 mm) AV connector, Micro-USB connector and the SIM Card holder. Anyway, Nokia N9 uses Micro SIM card.

    03112011027

Nokia is proud of its Carl Zeiss Tessar optic. This phone has Carl Zeiss optics (F2.2, focal length: 3.77mm / 28mm), 8 MP camera and dual LED flash. The camera is positioned on the top middle area.

    Nokia N9

To recharge the phone battery, it can be done using phone charge or USB data cable. It’s not very common to have this kind of charger in Indonesia. But, I think I need to buy the three-leg power converter. And last but not least, the microphone and the phone case.

    Earphones

    Phone case

If you want to know more about some technical specifications, you can go to Nokia N9 product page. Now, I’m still experiencing this phone and will share about it in my next posts. Anyway, I have also uploaded more unboxing photos to Flickr.

From the video, you can see some icons there about the top features. It will have Notification Center, iMessage (chat between iOS users), Newsstand, Reminders, Twitter deep intergration, Camera improvement, Photos , Game Center, Safari, and also PC Free.

And, if you want get the most from the release, you should check your iTunes. The latest version of iTunes (Version 10.5) is already available now. It will also support iTunes in the Cloud.

    What’s new?

    • iTunes in the Cloud. iTunes now stores your music and TV purchases in iCloud and makes them available on your devices anywhere, any time, at no additional cost.

  • So, what is the best Twitter Client?

Posted: October 12th, 2011, 9:24am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsDaily

Not exactly a Twitter client, but tool to manage social media accounts like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+ and more.

When I created my first Twitter account in 2006, there weren’t any applications for desktop or mobile. But, it’s 2011 and the service grows so fast. It’s around one billion tweets sent per week (according to March 2011 data). I love Twitter, and I also joined some other services. I don’t use all of them on daily basis, but more about learning how the service works, and how they’are designed. This is something I consider as something-I-like-to-do.

We are connected to each other using social media services. Many people want to be in the front row to get the latest news. They also want to know what is the latest information in the industry they’re involving with. I want to get the news shared by people I’m following on Twitter, or just to see what’s happening from my timeline.

At the same time, I want to share updates. These things seemed easy to be done. But, when it’s involving multiple social media accounts, I can be very busy. Not always, but sometime.

I have been trying and have some application installed on my gadgets — and also my MacBook Pro. I’m having Nokia N8, BlackBerry, and iPhone 4 now. Okey, don’t ask me why I need to have those gadgets. I just have them and don’t use them at the same time. But, I usually switch between those gadget — and of course, applications installed.

The thing is that not all applications works on every device I have with me, even they share similar features. Among many applications (free or paid) to manage my social media account. And these are some applications (including Twitter clients) I use — I switch between applications when I’m on my iPhone as my primary device right now.

I don’t have iPad and Android-based devices anyway. So, why bother having (too) many applications when I don’t use them all? Again, I like exploring how those things work. And, I like working on my account using its native application. For example like using Facebook for iPhone to explore Facebook, even HootSuite also works fine. Why? Switching between application is easy. Right?

I don’t have any other applications like TweetDeck, or Twitter for Mac on my Mac. For the web-based tool I sometime use HootSuite, CoTweet and Twitter website.

For the next post, I think I’ll write short reviews about those applications. From a end-user perspective. There are many tools/services that offer so many features. Probably, they works for businesses, not for personal use. Some are paid service, and some are free. When it comes into a simple question: “What is the best Twitter client?”, the answer should be simple: A client that works for you. Right?

  • I don’t send Instagram photos to Flickr automatically. Why?

Posted: September 1st, 2011, 7:44am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsDaily

I like taking photos using my iPhone 4 and send them to Instagram. At the same time, I also like Flickr. iPhone 4, Nokia N8, and Flickr should be a great combination. Both Instagram and Flickr have their good and bad. And, I think both services can not be compared. Each service has its own medium and audiences, including the way how contents delivered to its users.

Posting to Instagram is super easy. If you use it, you know what I mean. It also has filters. There are some good photography applications to edit or manipulate photos available for download at App Store. Everything looks perfect. But, I decide not to post my photos sent to Instagram to Flickr stream automatically. Yes, it’s a very easy process and I don’t do it. Why? Here are my personal three main reasons:

    1. It’s not big enough

When a photo posted to Instagram, it will be posted in multiple sizes. They are Thumbnail (150×150), Medium (306×306), and Large (612×612). Even I can post the large photo, it’s not big enough for me. I want to have my photos on Flickr as my personal photography archive too. By uploading manually to Flickr — from desktop or directly using application like Flickr for iPhone I can bigger photo, even the original photo size — taken using my iPhone.

    2. Reduced photo quality

It seems that Instagram will compress and reduced the image quality. Since all Instagram photos are made for iPhone screen, they’re still great on small screen device. Like I said before, Instagram and Flickr are just two different services. Compare these two photos:

Photos sent to Instagram directly from iPhone.

    Kluwak

    3. In most cases, I don’t want square photos.

Of course, I can have photos not being cropped by having white-space area. But, it seems that square images are perfect to be displayed in Instagram. In some cases, removing some objects from the photo — to get a square size — will not hurt. I take photos and I want to display them without being cropped most of the time.

    4. I want EXIF data

When I upload photos to Flickr, I don’t want to include the EXIF data information. I rarely did too much photo editing, usually only some minor adjustments like brightness or contrast. When I upload directly to Flickr using Instagram auto-share feature, all EXIF data information are gone.

Again, this reasons will not work for everybody. It’s just my personal preferences. I do still like both Instagram and Flickr.

  • Instagram and how Instagram works with its users

Yes, I’m joining Instagram under @thomasarie username. Having a desired username for Instagram username is easy and should be painless. But, that didn’t happen to me at first. I wanted to have @thomasarie as my username, but I was a little bit unlucky. I contacted Instagram support team after doing some attempts to get my username — yes, I want to have same username for some services :)

    Here’s a little bit story.

I created an Instagram account before I bought an iPhone just to secure my username. Then, after I bought myself an iPhone 4, I tried to login to my Instagram account. Nothing special, except I have to deal with my password. Yes, I forgot my password! Okey, you can laugh now. :D

So, I used the forgot password feature. I waited for few minutes and no reset password instruction being delivered. Maybe something was broken. I tried it again next day, and I still didn’t have any instructions to reset my password. I jumped to the Instagram Support Center to find out a solution. There are some details about account troubleshooting including account password, username and email address.

    To reset your password:

    • Follow the link above and enter the email address you used to sign up for Instagram
    • Click on the link in the email
    • Reset your password and login with your username and new password

Please email support@instagram.com if you are not receiving the password reset email in your inbox or cannot remember what username or email address you used to sign up for an account (as many details about the account as you can provide are appreciated!).

At that time, it didn’t work. So, I pushed my luck by sending a support ticket. During the period, I played with Instagram under another username. Lucky Instagram has feature to change username. So, when I’m able to have my desired username, I can move to it. I sent my last support ticket on August 11,2011. And, Instagram team replied my ticket on August 16, 2011! You know what the best part was? They gave me my username with a new password! Whooa! I logged in to my account, and changed the password right away into something I-will-not-forget-again!

After that, I did few things to move my active Instagram account under this username. Great! Thank you Instagram!

I know the fact that Instagram team is busy and keep its service up and running without any issues. I’m not blaming them for my issue. It was completely my mistake. But, having my problem solved less than a week is still really great for huge and busy service like this. Do I have a happy Instagram experience? I do.

Two weeks ago, I bought myself a black iPhone 4.  So did Lala. She bought the white one. I decided to buy it after I searched for reviews, looking up what I can do with it, and also how people work with this gadget. I was lucky because there was a great deal I didn’t want to miss.

For those who keep convincing me to get an iPhone 4, you may stop now. And, I personally would like to thank Firman Maulana (@kakilangit) for his kind help. He helped me a lot. Matur nuwun!

I like it so far. Really. Since I like photography, I love working with photography applications. Probably, iPhone and photography means Instagram. So yes, I joined Instagram — I’m @thomasarie. Also, I’m enjoying iPhone apps.

Last few weeks ago, I went to my relative’s house in Karanganyar. I had a chance to visit Solo City for about two hours before leaving this city to Jogjakarta. Wihout any plans, I stopped at Klewer Market (one of the biggest traditional markets in Solo City) and tried Serabi Solo. Solo is famous for its Serabi Notosuman, anyway.

While enjoying this serabi, I took some photos and create a short video episode for my videoblog. It was unplanned, but I decided to do it fast. I was thinking of having myself talking for few seconds in this video. I was lucky to have my relative with me. So, I asked him to hold the camera and directed him to hold and use my camera phone. The result is not super perfect, but I think it’s good enough.

… and I was on the stage sharing a little bit about Yahoo! Flickr.

Last week, I got an opportunity to join Yahoo! Community Town Hall event at @atamerica, Pacific Place, Jakarta. I had visited the venue for few times, but this time, I went there from Jogjakarta — I live in Jogjakarta (again) now, anyway.

A week before the event, I got an invite to be one of the speakers. The topic? Yahoo! Flickr. I was a little bit clueless about what I was going to present in my presentation slides. I was told that I only had around 10 minutes.

Okey, and this is my presentation slides. Two additional slides were added before I uploaded it to Slideshare.

This blog goes nowhere. It’ still here, still up and running, but I realized that there is no single post in the last… (almost) two months. Not to make any excuses, but I think I was busy. I’m still updating my other blog, though.

Few days ago, when I was working on some WordPress-powered blogs, I found that there are some changes. I upgraded some blogs — including some installed plugins, and I also found problems. But, the problems had been solved anyway. I logged in to my dashboard, and run some upgrade processes. One of the problems I found was a WordPress plugin called “Jetpack”. Anyway, if you haven’t heard about Jetpack, here is a little bit detail:

Jetpack is a plugin that connects to WordPress.com and enables awesome features, powered by our cloud infrastructure.

There are already some features included, but I think I only use of: WordPress.com Stats. Previously, I have WordPress.com Stats plugin installed, after having my blog upgraded to Version 3.1, the statistic plugin stopped working and left this message: “Your WordPress.com account is not authorized to view the stats of this blog”. After searching some answers, most of the solutions mentioned about having Jetpack replaced WordPress.com Stats.

But, when I tried to activate Jetpack — by authenticating to  WordPress.com account — it didn’t run smoothly. I got this error:

Your Jetpack has a glitch. Something went wrong that’s never supposed to happen. Guess you’re just lucky: xml_rpc-32601Try connecting again.

I tried again and again. I searched for a solution and the problem was because I have a cache plugin installed. By the way, I use W3 Total Cache. So, I disabled the cache settings, sent an authentication request, and voila! Problem solved. If you find problem just like what I had, now you know the solution.

I also made some theme modification here. I removed some features I considered as “not-too-important”. More importantly, it’s a matter of having some articles posted here. Shoot!

This December, I had chances to attend some events in Jakarta. From community event to football game. Here they are:

    AFF Suzuki Cup 2010

I went to AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 first matched at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. On that day, Indonesia met Malaysia team and scored 5 goals!

    AFF Suzuki Cup 2010

    Yahoo! Communities Meetup

Probably, this is the biggest Yahoo! event I’ve been attending until today. On that day, lots of Koprol, Flickr and Yahoo! Answers users gathered at Blitz Megaplex Pacific Place, Jakarta. I think there were around 200 people there. Here’s a photo (for more photos, go to event photoset):

    Y!: Jakarta Communities Meetup

MarkPlus Conference 2011 New Wave Party

Also at Pacific Place. I went there on the evening representing and went home late at night. I know, from the the photoset, I think I need to learn more about the word “party” here.

    New Wave Party

TEDx Jakarta 6th event: Somethink Different

It was my second TEDx event, and didn’t enjoy all inspiring presentations since I needed to go to another venue on that evening. I left the venue after the break. :(

I went to TEDx Jakarta for the first time in July this year. And, it was because I stay in Jakarta. When I was in Jogjakarta, going to TEDx event become something that I didn’t expect. I like TED events — including its independently-organized event, this is why it has “x” in its name. I downloaded lots of videos from TED Talks. Not sure how many videos in have in my hard-drive, but until today, I feel that I got many knowledge — only by watching the talks.

In the previous TEDx Jakarta event, there were many inspiring speakers like Irfan Amalee, Irwan Ahmett, Dr. Nurul Taufiqu Rochman, Barry Likumahuwa, Ade Rai and Ridwan Kamil. After that event, I told myself that I should be going to the next TEDx event. Today, I got a confirmation letter that I got the invitation. Nice!

I’m ready to be inspired by some speakers like Adi Panuntun, Betti S. Alisjahbana, Chandra Tresnadi, René Suhardono, Anies Baswedan, and Sanggar Roda. Go to speakers’ page to find our more about them. I’m not trying to search for any details about what the speakers will present. Well, for this… I will let them surprise me — and hopefully all the audience. :)

    Now, for personal reminder:

    • Venue: Pusat Perfilman Usmar Ismail (Usmar Ismail Hall) Kuningan
    • Address: Jl. H.R. Rasuna Said Kav C. 22, Jakarta 12940
    • Time & Date: December 19th, 2010. 2 PM — 6 PM, registration opens 1 PM

Anyway, I took lots of picture during 5th TEDx Jakarta event. You can go to its photoset at Flickr. And, if you want to see the videos, you can visit TEDxJakarta video playlist. And, if you want to be TEDx Jakarta speaker, there’s a question to answer. :)

I will be going to first(?) Yahoo! Communities Meetup event this Wednesday, at Blitz Megaplex Pacific Place, Jakarta. So, what is it all about? From its event page at Upcoming:

It’s a gathering of community members from Yahoo!’s community-based services, particularly Yahoo! Answers, Flickr and Koprol.
This is your chance to meet your fellow community members and the people who help manage those services on Yahoo!. Expect an exciting evening of meeting new and familiar people and discovering new stuff about Flickr, Answers and Koprol.

Since I’m a Flickr and Koprol user, I don’t have any reason not to join this event. Yahoo! is expecting 200 people in this event. When I write this post, there are 150 people on the list. So, if you don’t have any schedules on that day, mark you calendar and signup to the event. It’s free anyway.

To be more specific, it seems that this event is closely related to Flickr’s annoucement. Okey, see you!

  • Bagaimana saya mendapatkan Nokia N8 dari Nokia UK (sebagai hadiah)?

Posted: October 22nd, 2010, 12:09am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsDaily

I write this post in Bahasa Indonesia because I want to share my stories on how I got a brand new Nokia N8. This is my personal story, and I’m not sponsored, endorsed, or affiliated with Nokia. Thank you.

Hari pertama: gagal. Hari kedua: gagal lagi. Hari ketiga, akhirnya saya melihat nama saya disebut sebagai pemenang harian. Wahh! Senang? Tentu saja, karena saat itu memang sudah mengikuti beberapa perkembangan terbaru seputar Nokia N8 ini. Sepertinya ponsel ini menawarkan fitur yang bagus. Tetap saya lanjutkan setiap hari menjawab pertanyaan setiap hari. Memang ada satu hari dimana saya lupa menjawab. Jadi, ya hilang kesempatan untuk menang hadiah utama. Tapi, kalau menang, mungkin malah lebih bingung sih… :D

Itulah sedikit cerita tentang keberuntungan saya. Ayo, kita coba keberuntungan lagi! :D

Last week, I joined Mozilla Indonesia Community meetup at Blitz Megaplex, Pacific Place, Jakarta. Lots of people confirmed to join this event, and the news mentioned about some goodies for those who came earlier. I got there almost at 7 PM (blame the heavy rain and flood!). I was surprised because lots of people already there. No goodies. But, no problem.

    Mozilla Indonesia Meetup (Sept 2010)

This time, Mozilla sent Gen Kanai (@gen) and Mitchell Baker (@MitchellBaker) and they shared some valuable information related to Mozilla — globally and especially in Indonesia. Other thing was that in this meetup, a new Mozilla Indonesia mascot was introduced. So, if you use Firefox, meet “Kumi“, Mozilla Indonesia mascot!

    Mozilla Indonesia Meetup (Sept 2010)

Gen Kanai already covered this meetup. So, go read Gen Kanai’s post. I was lucky also because I had a chance to had another question-and-answer session with Gen Kanai himself (Thanks to the after-party time at Roti Bakar Edi, Blok M) I asked him about Mozilla Thunderbird in the situation that more people are going mobile.

I took some photos, but not that many. You can go to my Flickr photostream for event photos.

  • Anyway, About the Skateboard from Ovi

Posted: June 5th, 2010, 9:59am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsDaily

Finally, I had the skateboard delivered by Nokia Ovi to my office few days ago. It was shipped using UPS service. Why I got this skateboard? You can read the story on my previous post.

When I firstly got the news that I was the lucky person who got the skateboard, I thought it would be shipped from Finland. But, I was wrong. Niini Kokkonen, Ovi Blog’s editor, said to me that it would be shipped from the US office. On the next day, she emailed me telling that the skateboard had been shipped using UPS service. And I waited. OK, I’ll be honest: I checked the delivery status everyday. :D

Skateboard from Nokia Ovi Blog (by orangescale)

At around 4 PM, I got a phone call from UPS and they told me that I got a package. They asked about my office location. I gave the direction to the guy behind the phone. He said that the package should arrive in about two hours. So I opened the box, and found that shiny skateboard deck with a letter inside it.

It was only the deck. If I want to use it, I think I need to get some accessories like the trucks, wheels and also bearings. Not sure where to find those items in Jakarta. I’ll get them later. I am not sure whether I can stand on it or not. Yes, I played skateboard, but it was like 15 years ago! LOL. But of course, it’s still a wonderful gift.

So, is it only about the skateboard? No. Personally, it’s more about the whole processes. It’s about how I got it, and the stories behind it. I learn few things here.

Letter from Nokia Ovi Blog (by orangescale)

First: Nokia (Ovi Blog) uses its blog (and also its Twitter account) as a great medium to interact with its audience in general, especially with its customers (Nokia users). The whole story I mentioned above was started by a blog post. It was about Ovi Blog asking for feedbacks from its readers. And, they listened. Of course, there were lots of great feedbacks. I was one of the lucky readers.

Second: they’re reachable. If you read Ovi Blog, you’ll get the idea of what I’m talking about. The people behind the blog actively involved in the discussion. When I got the email for the first time, it was written in a friendly tone. All emails I sent were replied in one or two days. This is good. I will not post the email here, but it was fun to communicate with them. Well, I only communicated with the editor. :)

    Thank you Ovi!

[Update: June 10, 2010] Ovi Blog has another post related to this entry.

  • Videoblog. Again.

Posted: April 27th, 2010, 8:14am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsDaily

With my friend, I decided to create a new videoblog. Previously, I had one at orangebox.tv, but since I was busy and almost had no time to maintain it, I left the domain expired. Now, it has a new domain name, with a new concept. I will not talk about technology or other geeky stuff. If you like technology, you should visit Webicara, Notsogeeky, or Macindos.TV. Our new videoblog will focus on daily life.

Right now, almost all videos take Jakarta as the object. But, for me personally, I see many interesting stuff here in Jakarta — I’ve been staying in this city for almost three months. Last month, we went to Kalibata and Pasar Minggu. Not only to have durian, but also witnessing another area in Jakarta, at night. Not really at night, but can I say early in the morning?

What makes this videoblog different — from my previos one — is that I do it with a partner. He’s a good friend of mine since high school. The other important thing is that we share a same concept and understanding. It makes the videoblogging process easier. We do this videoblog mostly on weekend since we’re both working.

Anyway, the videoblog is using dadio.tv as its domain name. And we put our videos on YouTube. What does it mean? It might be meaningless in English, or in Indonesian language. But, you understand Javanese language, you’ll get the meaning. Yeah, it’s not a television, anyway. :D Okey, there are already some videos to watch. We have some videos on the stock about Betawi culture, food and also train (the economy class!).

We went to Kalibata Street to have some durian and also Pasar Minggu — one of the biggest traditional market in Jakarta — to see the market at midnight.

At Kalibata, we had durian. Yay! Finally! The price was not too expensive I think. I bought two durian and shared another one durian for some kids I met there. We had three. I spent IDR 50,000. Fair enough.

I went there at around 10 PM. After that, my friend and I went to Pasar Minggu. The plan was that we want to go to Muara Baru with some people to get fresh fish. But, we’re late. We arrived at Pasar Minggu around 8 PM. We decided to have durian first, and go back to Pasar Minggu at midnight.

At around 11.40 PM, we finally arrived at Pasar Minggu. After waiting for some moments, we finally met the people who just got back from Muara Baru. Here are some pictures I took.

I spent my next hours to talk and find out how everything was going there. Still with my friend, we went inside the market, talk to the sellers and witnessing the business there. It was fun! Yeah, I was a little bit sleepy at around 2 AM. But, since they said that the market will be busier at around 3 or 4, we waited. I took some lots of photos and also videos. Yes, we made some videos there and we’ll share them shortly.

It was fun. Really. We went home at around 5 AM. :)

  • Wishlist: Twitter released a new feature called ‘Mute’

Posted: January 24th, 2010, 8:55am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsDaily

Sound control (by orangescale)I tweeted a Twitter wishlist. I want to see a new feature called “Mute” on Twitter. So, why I want to have this, or how it should be useful for user (at least for me)? Here’s a situation:

I follow some people on Twitter. I follow them because I know them well — have a personal relationship like friend. They’re actually a nice person. But, sometime they’re annoying. Or for whatever reason they’re just flood my timeline with something I don’t really care about. They might do this in a certain period. I like their updates, but sometime I don’t. I don’t want to block or unfollow them because some people will put it into something personal. It might break something.

So, rather than blocking them, I want to hide their updates from my timeline. It’s like “I want certain people I follow do not appear in my timeline”.

“You’re stupid! There is a feature called ‘Unfollow’. There’s also ‘Block this user’!

I know. But,’Mute’ is a little bit different. It’s simply like ‘filtering timeline’. Not permanently so that I can put some muted users back to my timeline. This feature will not killing the features appears when I follow someone — or someone follows me. They’re not blocked. They’re just muted. So, when two Twitter users are following each other, they’re still have all features. They still can send/receive direct messages each other. They don’t have to receive a notification when someone is unfollowing and then following back.

“Unfollow them and put them on a list/group!”

This might work, but again this is more like grouping some Twitter users into a list. It might work when I don’t want to use Twitter as communication tool. When some people on Twitter don’t want to see my updates in their timelines, they can simply mute me.

It has been a month since I started using Telkom Speedy service. So far, I have nothing but positive service. I’m an active internet user and I use internet everyday. I haven’t experienced any connection problem.

Few days after I had my internet connection, I had a phone call from Telkom Speedy representative. She asked me whether I have my internet connection working or not. She also welcomed me and said thank you for using Telkom service. I got information also if I have problem with the connection, I can call the customer support. I already know about this but I never try it until today.

Today, I got another call from them. They informed me that they’ve received my payment and asked me about their service so far. I told the guy that I don’t have problem so far. I’m not sure about the other customers in other city, but here in Jogjakarta (in my place), I have a good experience.

Anyway, I tried to pay my Speedy bill using bank transfer (from ATM), but it seemed that the system is not ready yet here in Jogjakarta. Anyone got the same experienced?

  • Now with more photos. And they’re bigger

Posted: June 18th, 2009, 8:13pm WIT by Thomas Arie

When I knew about The Big Pictures, I told myself that I wanted to have one too. A place where I display some photos I took. A dedicated photoblog came into my mind. I know that it’s something I can create, technically.

But, I wasn’t sure that I maintain it well — keep it updated, upgrade, etc. Then, I was thinking of displaying photos directly into this blog. I’ve been doing this for few months actually. I put photos from my Flickr photostream here. But, I want something bigger. I want to display more photos. All photos uploaded into my Flickr collections are big enough. But, if I want to put it here, it might be “too big” or “too small”.

So, I made some adjustment here. I modify my blog stylesheet to give more space for photos. I think the photos are big enough. For some reason, I did not include the photos in RSS feed. So, you will not get photo update from RSS reader. The reason is because I have a full content in my RSS and I don’t want to flood your RSS reader and aggregator with probably-too-big picture (if you subscribe to my RSS feed, of course). I’m still finding the best solution for this.

Finally, I have a chance to try my new internet connection. I’m using Telkom Speedy’s Multi Speed package. Actually, I’m satisfied with my current provider. I decided to get another internet connection so that my sister can get her own connection, from her own room.

My current provider does not allow me to share the connection. I can subscribe for an additional line, but considering the cost — because I need to buy other peripherals — and also internet connection backup solution, I chose Speedy. The registration process was simple. I signed up, filed some forms. I signed up on Friday when I visited a computer exhibition. Speedy offered discount at that time. Today, two technicians came to my house and they setup everything.

When I tried it, it’s fast. I read many complains about Speedy service. There are many negative comments — and also the positives one. I think I’m lucky. I hope I can get reliable connection using this Speedy. Let’s see…

  • Douglas Bowman’s Farewell Post

Posted: March 23rd, 2009, 4:38am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsDaily

I like reading Douglas Bowman’s farewell post. He left Google after three years. Here’s a paragraph:

Yes, it’s true that a team at Google couldn’t decide between two blues, so they’re testing 41 shades between each blue to see which one performs better. I had a recent debate over whether a border should be 3, 4 or 5 pixels wide, and was asked to prove my case. I can’t operate in an environment like that. I’ve grown tired of debating such minuscule design decisions. There are more exciting design problems in this world to tackle.

Other comment about this farewell post:

This is, I believe, why Google’s products (many of which are great and innovative–I remain a devoted Gmail fan, for example) will always fall short of achieving the emotional connection that people feel to an iPhone. There’s no one with real power there who has a good sense of what makes a product beautiful or when it feels “electric.” You can’t quantify that sort of thing through study or harness collective brainpower to coerce it–someone just has to know it when they see it. Yesterday, I enabled some Google Mail features offered from its Labs section — I’ve enabled some before. Google Mail Labs is a place to test some new features in Gmail. There are many features/applications we can test.

Google Mail users or those who use Google Apps for domain can enjoy this feature. Go to top right navigation, and there is a small icon to visit the lab section.

I enabled YouTube, Picasa and Flickr preview in mail features. If we enable this feature, we can see multimedia files preview inside our Google Mail account. The pictures/videos will be derived from the link inside the mail content. If there is a link to YouTube video, we can watch the video inline. Useful!

  • Google Chrome’s Incognito Mode

    chrome incognito

Google Chrome offers another type of window/browsing mode called “incognito mode”. When we’re using Google Chrome in incognito mode page information (website addresses, downloaded files will not be stored/logged in our browsing and download histories. And, when we close the “incognito window”, all new cookies will be deleted right away.

Read mode details about incognito mode at Google Chrome Help page.

In simple definition, it means we can use incognito for more private browsing. It’s about information on your side, not server’s. If the server logs your data (IP address, user agents, etc), your data will be recorded.

But, I don’t regularly — well, almost never — use it. My main reason is because I’m using Google Chrome — and other browsers — in a private computer. And, sometime browsing histories are useful. The download histories, too.

    flickr-pro

I just renewed my expired Flickr Pro subscription. I know, Flickr already removed its set limits for free account. I think the most “annoying” about having a free account is not about set limit. It’s more about its 200 recent photos rule.

Oke, the renewal process was simple. Few clicks, and I can enjoy the Pro features again.

I tried to upgrade my Flickr Uploadr also. But, it was crashed few times when I uploaded my photos — no videos. Did I upload many photos at a time? I didn’t. I just uploaded 5-8 photos at once. I think I’ll use the old uploader. What about the video uploader feature? Right now, I don’t use it. I still don’t have a plan to upload videos to Flickr. May be later. Flickr is about photo. If I want to upload a video, I will use a video sharing provider like blip.tv.

  • Follow and follow back on Twitter

    TagsDaily

On Twitter, I have some personal preferences about who I follow. When someone follows me, I usually do not follow them back directly for some reasons, mostly it’s because of spammy users. If someone starts following me, I usually check his/her profile first. I tried not to follow people back without reading about their profile (and their updates).

I will not follow other Twitter users back mainly because of these two reasons:

    • I do not know them. The word “know” here is not about I have met them in real life. I look up their profile. If they have no profile, website/blog URL, or short biography. I will not follow them. I might block them.
    • They follow many people, but have less follower and updates, e.g. Following 800+ users, less than 10 followers, and the first update is few minutes ago?

Usually, I block them right away. Anyway, I follow other people not because I want them to follow me back.

  • Jogjakarta Earthquake, Twitter and Mainstream Media

Posted: December 31st, 2008, 11:39pm WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsDaily

Today, when I was watching TV, I felt the tremors. The windows were shaking. Earthquake! I jumped from the chair, run outside and calling my grandparents, telling them that there’s an earthquake. I went outside. When I was outside the house, I heard my neighbor screamed also.

Two years ago, there was an earthquake also. It was on May 29 27, 2006, around 5.55 AM. You can see more pictures about the earthquake on my old Flickr account. This Flickr account will not be updated since I have switch to a new Flickr account.

For few seconds, I stayed outside the house. After I found that it was safe enough to get back to the house, I went back to my room, shared what just happened via Twitter. I went to the living room, watching TV to find the news. Switch to TV channels. No news at all. While finding news, I called my parents in Bantul. They said that they also felt it. Not big, but shocking. When the big earthquake happened 2 years ago, I was in Jogja. I think many people still have the trauma. I’m, too.

I found no news on TV. At least the warning, breaking news or whatsoever. Probably some TV stations gave updates, but I missed them. As a person who was in this kind situation, we need updates (time, scale, earthquake epicentrum). And, TV is probably the most effective medium. But, no news.

OK, I went back to my room, searched for the info from the internet. Still nothing. I heard about the news from Twitter. Some friends gave updates. Anyway, is the earthquake early warning system still working? The first update I got was from my friend in Jakarta, @aulia via Twitter, telling that it was 4.7 SR. It was in Jogjakarta, but the map is a little bit strage.

Everything is fine here. No destruction. Information/updates in this kind of situation is desperately needed. This time, for some peole, Twitter wins again.

Added later: My first tweet about the earthquake was at 07:08 (GMT). After that, I sent some updates — still using Twitter. My friend @vetamandra also gave updates.

  • New design for this blog

Posted: December 15th, 2008, 6:42am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsDaily

I have been very busy in the last few weeks, many things to do. I needed to recharge my energy. And this is the result: a new design for my blog. I created this theme for fun, at least to keep my mood in balance, to bring my mood back to the other design work.

After upgrading to WordPress 2.7 few days ago, I wanted to have some changes here, especially by taking advantages from new features introduced in the latest WordPress, e.g. built-in threaded comment. Here are some notes on my new blog design.

    Template tags

Still related to template tags, I try to take advantage from the way WordPress produces CSS selectors. Here is an example. Open index.php in default theme folder, you should see this for the entry loop:

    <div <?php post_class() ?> id="post-<?php the_ID(); ?>">

The code above will produce something like this:

    <div class="post hentry category-services category-sites category-www category-webdev tag-htaccess tag-facebook tag-linkedin tag-service tag-twitter tag-url" id="post-1026">

Do you see the pattern? It will produce some post classes on the entry data (categories and tags). This function is called post_class(). By this, we can customize how each entry (inside the loop) should be displayed, just work with the stylesheet.

If you want to make you theme compatible well with WordPress 2.7, just head to Migrating Plugins and Themes to 2.7 article at WordPress Codex. There are some other useful information for theme designers — and also for you as bloggers.

    Threaded comments

I decided to have a 3-level of comment depth — a parent comment with 2 sub/child comments. I can choose up to 10 levels of depth, but I think three is enough (for this blog).

I never use this kind of settings (threaded comment), so this is a new thing for me. Some WordPress users probably have this setting by Threaded Comment plugin. If you want to use this feature, using WordPress default template file will be the best option. I almost keep the original comments.php for this design. Use WordPress default theme, try the threaded comment and view the HTML output. From there, it’s your turn to tune up the design by working on the stylesheet.

    Plugins

I disabled many plugins since I do not use them on my theme. I did not delete them, just deactivated them. If I need them again, I can simply activate them. About RSS parser, I do not use SimplePie for WordPress this time. I use WordPress built-in RSS parser. It works without any problems. So, this time I use less WordPress plugins.

    Conclusion

WordPress 2.7 will bring many advantages for theme designers and also bloggers related to blogging activity or design stuff. For some people it might take time to learn many new features. But, it will also trigger creativity at the same time. I will make some minor changes on this site. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let me know using the comment form.

I decided to start a videoblogging now. When I am with my camera digital, sometime I capture videos and photos. So, why not bring the videos online? I know it is probably not popular — especially in Indonesia. But, why not?

After doing comparison steps among some video hosting providers like Vimeo, YouTube, blip.tv, Yahoo! Video, Google Video, etc, I decided to host all my videos to Vimeo and embed to my videoblog. I capture all videos using both camera digital and my mobile phone Nokia. Just in case you find a low-quality videos, you know the reasons. :)

Movable Type celebrates its 7th anniversary this month. Happy birthday Movable Type! Even now I’m not using Movable Type, I used Movable Type for few years. I want to make few posts related to Movable Type. I think I used Movable Type when it was Movable Type 2.6x.

    • Dec 22, 2003 — Why: Migration from one to another. I write about why choosing Movable Type, at that time.
    • May 14, 2004 — MT 3.0 is ready, I am not. I was lucky to be one of the Movable Type 3.0 beta testers. And, it was the first time Movable Type introduced a new pricing scheme.
    • May 16, 2004 — WordPress vs. MovableType. Since I tried many blogging tools before, I wrote a small comparisons between two leading platform.
    • Aug 15, 2004 — Removing .php in permalinks. Movable Type already had a built-in permalink structures. And, I tried to make it nicer.
    • Aug 26, 2004 — Upgrading to Personal License. Hey, I purchased a Personal License. And I think it was the first time I received a comment from a person at Six Apart. It was Mr. Anil Dash.
    • Oct 06, 2004 — MovableStyle. I mentioned about Movable Style.
    • Oct 16, 2004 — Why I still use Movable Type? Here, Movable Type probably is not popular among other blogging engines. But, I still use it. So, I wrote some reasons why I sticked to Movable Type.
    • Jul 26, 2005 — Post to MT (3.2) from del.icio.us. As del.icio.us (now delicious) user, I wanted to post my delicious links directly to Movable Type. And, it was soooo easy. It’s still easy right now.
    • Sep 22, 2006 — Combining entries from two weblogs (Movable Type 3.3x). One of the best features from Movable Type is that it support multiple weblogs. Was it difficult to combine multiple weblogs and display them in the order we wanted? No, it’s easy.

    The stories continues…

I learn many things from Movable Type. Not only Movable Type, but also the company behind it: Six Apart. There was a joke between Ikhlasul Amal (he’s still using Movable Type now). He said that Six Apart should here hire me for Indonesian market. Hehe!

Okey, need to stop writing. Happy birthday Movable Type!

  • Organizing My Feed Subscriptions

I use RSS reader to follow updates from my favorite sites. When I subscribed for the first time, I just loved those sites. I found them useful. But, right now I am thinking of re-organizing my subscriptions. Even the feedreader — I use Google Reader — has ability to keep the headlines, I don’t think that I can follow them all. I tried, and I was failed.

I ask myself about those feeds:

    • Do I need them? I mean, I really need to read those updates?
    • If I do not subscribe to those feeds, will I get impact? I mean, my work, my job, etc.
    • Do I need to subscribe to multiple feeds having similar contents?
    • Can I get updates using other methods? For example, having combined feeds using Yahoo! Pipes or RSS Mixer so that I only need to read contents I really need?

Those are some reasons. Right now, I review my subscriptions. Will delete some.

  • IDR 100K to Update Domain Registrant Contact and Domain Transfer for .ID Domains

Posted: October 9th, 2008, 1:18am WIT by Thomas Arie

If you’re having .ID domains — I do have some, you might heard about the news. That’s right, the news (it’s official!) said that starting from November 1, 2008, we need to pay IDR 100,000 (around US $10) to update Registrant Contact and/or Admin domain information. And, what makes it even better is that we need an formal letter. But, if we only need to update billing, technical contact and nameservers… it’s free.

Anyway, I posted about my experience about .ID domain renewal last year. With this new policy, I think I’ll avoid using .ID. If my clients want to register .ID domains, they should know about this first. It’s much cheaper — and easier — to have .COM!

  • Back to Ubuntu

More than a year ago, I installed Ubuntu as another operating system in my computer. During that time, I tried to explore its features and got some new experiences using many open source softwares.

I did not know when I finally decided to remove my Ubuntu installation. After that, I tried another distro. It was OpenSUSE. Anyway, I feel so lucky because I have some friends who are also using some distros. Thanks to Yan Arief and Redy! I bugged them with many basic questions. How to do this? How to do that? And many other HOW-TO’s. :)

In the last two months, I went back to Ubuntu again. I removed OpenSUSE on my PC and installed Ubuntu (Hardy Heron). When I bought a new laptop, I also installed OpenSUSE. But, I have some problem with the network settings. Not major, but sometime it’s annoying.

Right now, I am using Ubuntu for my PC and laptop. So far, I like it. Again, big thanks to Yan Arief and Redy for their supports and patience!

  • Do You Block Other Twitter Users?

Posted: September 22nd, 2008, 3:12pm WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsDaily

My short answer is: Yes. Sometimes, I do block some Twitter users (followers). The main reason is pretty simple. I think they’re spammy users. For example, here are their ‘condition’:

    • I could not even see his/her profile. No URL, no short bio.
    • He/she follows too-many users, but only have little followers.
    • He/she only promote what he/she’s doing. Okey, I am not talking about @cnnbrk — it’s a different story.

So, I blocked them. In Twitter, blocking a person means:

    • You will no longer show up in the blocked person’s list of friends.
    • Your updates won’t show up on the blocked person’s profile page.
    • The blocked person will not be able to add you as a friend.
    • You can unblock people. You’ll have to add them as a friend after unblocking, though.

I’m fine with that. I’m just curious, are you also blocking other users?

  • Fight Global Warming and White Roofs

A recent study found that there is a connection between global warming and white roofs.

A can of white paint should be part of the planet’s arsenal against global warming, say California researchers, who have calculated that installing white roofs in the world’s cities could offset 1.5 years of man-made carbon emissions. (source)

For related article in Bahasa Indonesia, please go to akuinginhijau.wordpres.com, a very informative blog about environment. Anyway, I painted my room green. Just curious, if I painted white, does it help to lower the room temperature? Please don’t suggest to get air conditioner. :)

  • Google Reader Problems

Today, I had problem opening Google Reader. I am not sure what caused it, because I did nothing unusual using my laptop. I noticed that it happened after I had Google Chrome installed. But, I am NOT saying that Google Chrome caused this issue. Not sure about this (Thanks Yogi for the correction).

The problem was that I have my browsers stopped loading. I even tried almost all browsers installed on my laptop. No luck. Doh! I am sure it’s not about the internet connection. Because I could not figure out how to solve this issue, I tried to re-install Google Gears. Before I did that, I disabled Greasemonkey script used by Google Reader (in Firefox).

After having Google Reader re-installed, I opened Google Reader page again. Surprise! It’s back to normal again now. At least I do not have to switch to another web-based RSS reader.

  • Some Opera Features I Don’t Use

Posted: June 16th, 2008, 2:39pm WIT by Thomas Arie

Even Opera offeres many features to get the most from a web browser, I do not use all of them on my daily basis. Sometime, I do not use them at all. This is similar to other technologies like mobile phone. There are many features, but usually, we do not use them all even they’re all there. So, here are some Opera features I do not use (or, I only use some of its features):

    • Opera Built-in Email Client — I like reading email from the web (using browser). This is because email client does not suit me — especially related to my internet connection speed.
    • Feed Reader — I already have hundreds of feeds in my Google Reader.
    • Chat — I am not comfortable using Opera built-in chat.
    • Opera Widgets — I use it but only some (less than 10 widgets).

There are still many Opera capabilities, of course. I just like when I use Opera to browse the internet; using Opera as web browser.

Yesterday, my girl and I had a plan watching The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian at 21 Theather. I haven’t read many reviews about this movie, but a short review from Willy was more than enough. I did watched the first sequel of Narnia — The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Not my favorite, but I just like it.

When we tried to get tickets, there were only 3 seats available. And, they were on the front row. No way! Okey, next time!

  • WordPress and My Blogging Productivity

Posted: April 30th, 2008, 7:10pm WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsDaily

After moving from Movable Type and WordPress, I feel that my blogging productivity is increasing. I mean, I have more posts this month. Yeah, probably it’s not about the engine. It’s probably about the spirit of blogging. But, for me… if I have to be honest, WordPress has its own role for me. How? Here are some factors:

    • Writing an entry should be easy. The point is getting an entry composing screen. How fast you can reach that screen? The word “fast” here is always closely related to some factors like internet connection, document size, etc. I feel that WordPress is a lightweight application (compared to Movable Type, for example). So, I do not have to wait longer to start typing.
    • Now, it’s time to write an entry. Using WordPress, I can do it easily. WordPress only offers two types of composing style (rich-editor and HTML mode). If I want to upload a picture, it’s not difficult at all. Well, I like the upload photo mechanism in the previous release. But, I am fine with the current schema.
    • Entry formatting! I like when I can have a good and clean HTML tags in my entry. When I write an entry in both visual or simple mode, I can always have a good HTML outputs.
    • I can use a desktop blogging tool. Rignt how, I use BlogDesk. And, related to the previous point. It just works. Period. When I insert a photo from my desktop publishing tool, it will be uploaded in the right place, without thinking whether it’s placed properly or not.

It has been a month. And, I feel comfortable.

It's raining now. It's a good thing to have rain here. In the last few months, it was hot, really hot in Jogjakarta. At least I can get more friendly weather. The problem is, I live in an unlucky area. I do not know the real problem, but I think it's because the electricity network in my area is not that good. Not only in rainy season, during the normal weather condition, I got many electricity problem. It went out. It just did.
