  • Migration Assistant Update for Mac OS X Snow Leopard

Posted: July 20th, 2011, 6:58pm WIT by Thomas Arie

Got this piece of information from Deon Sukma’s tweet this morning. It’s about Migration Assistant Update for Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Mac OS X Lion will be released this Wednesday (today?). I checked the update from Software Update menu, and found it. It says:

This update addresses an issue with the Migration Assistant application in Mac OS X Snow Leopard that prevents transfer of your personal data, settings, and compatible applications from a Mac running Mac OS X Snow Leopard to a new Mac running Mac OS X Lion.

My MacBook is now using OS X Snow Leopard  Version 10.6.8 and has all softwares updated. Yes, I’m waiting for the Lion. :D

  • WordPress 3.2.1 Dashboard Problems

Posted: July 19th, 2011, 1:02pm WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsBlogger

After upgrading to WordPress 3.2.1, I didn’t work with it right away. I found that the Dashboard had a new look, and I was fine with that. When I logged in to my WordPress Dashboard few days ago, I experienced some problems. Few key features — especially on the post editing screen — were broken.

I can’t insert image easily, the text formatting buttons also didn’t work well. I can’t edit post permalink (post slug). I went to WordPress support forums, and there were some users experiencing the same problems. There is also a forum thread as detailed troubleshooting guidelines. Reading the thread, I found the problem was on Disqus Commenting System plugin. Yes, I use Disqus for my blog. Something needed to be done with this plugin. I don’t want to use the native commenting system. So, I searched for a solution. And, I found one at Miranda@AT’s blog.

Since Disqus haven’t released an update for this issue, you need to edit the plugin manually. Here are some details:

    Problem (source):

Using Opera Dragonfly, I quickly found a JavaScript error:
Uncaught exception: Syntax error, unrecognized expression: [href=edit-comments.php?page=disqus]
This is caused by a change in jQuery which was upgraded to version 1.5.2 in WordPress  3.2. Unquoted selectors are no longer allowed in jQuery 1.5.2, so this is a fairly easy fix.

    Solution by Miranda@AT:

    • Open wp-content/plugins/disqus-comment-system/disqus.php
    • Go to around line 761, and find this — Use Disqus Commenting Sytem version 2.61:
      mc.find('a.wp-has-submenu').attr('href', 'edit-comments.php?page=disqus').end().find('.wp-submenu  li:has(a[href=edit-comments.php?page=disqus])').prependTo(mc.find('.wp-submenu ul'));
    • Replace this code: li:has(a[href=edit-comments.php?page=disqus]) with li:has('a[href=edit-comments.php?page=disqus]')
    • Save the file.

After having the plugin file modified, I had the Dashboard worked normally. At least, the key features are back to normal.

  • Blogger will stop its FTP Publishing feature

Posted: January 24th, 2010, 8:21am WIT by Thomas Arie
    TagsBlogger

When I use Blogger service few years ago, one of my favorite feature was FTP Publishing. Using this feature, I had Blogger publish my post to my own web hosting account. The main reason was that I can use my own custom domain for my Blogger-powered blog. If you’re using this, I think we had a same reason.

But, it was the time when blogging was not so easy like today. Right now, some people find that finding a free blog service is challenging. I mean, there are lots of options available. You can have WordPress.com, Posterous, Tumblr and more. Web hosting and domain service are also much cheaper. Most hosted service also offers a custom domain feature so that we can use our own domain using service’s infrastructure.

Blogger says that there are only 5% of active blogs published via FTP. And, it’s a reason to stop this feature. Probably, it’s a bad news for those 5% users. This FTP Publishing feature will not be supported after March 26, 2010. So, what should you do if you’re using FTP Publishing feature? You can switch to Blogger’s Custom Domain OR use the Blogspot.com domain. This migration tool will be available on February 22, 2010. All traffics will be redirected.

For this FTP Publishing related information, Blogger already setup a blog to give updates of the situation at http://blogger-ftp.blogspot.com.

  • Blogger.com Supports Geotagging

    Geotagging in Blogger.com

Blogger.com will support geotagging feature. You can get this feature on Blogger in draft. If you don’t know what geotagging means, Wikipedia explains:

Geotagging is the process of adding geographical identification metadata to various media such as photographs, video, websites, or RSS feeds and is a form of geospatial metadata. This data usually consists of latitude and longitude coordinates, though it can also include altitude, bearing, accuracy data, and place names.

When posting an entry, we can include geotagging an additional posting info. This can be useful for travel bloggers. Geotagging meta data will be placed in entry footer area. The location is integrated with Google Maps. So, clicking on the given location will go to Google Maps. [See picture]

About finding location, we can use the inline search feature. Just put the location e.g. Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Or, if you want to get more spesific location, we can search using latitude and longitude coordinates. For example: -7.797224,110.368797. The geo location will be included in RSS using GeoRSS. It will make feed readers, map applications and search engines be able to associate your posts with their locations.

Since this feature is still in beta phase (draft), there are some bugs. But, if you only want to test it out, you can do it.

  • Joining FAM Trip Journalist as bloggers

    FAM TRIP Journalist

Last week, Yan Arief told me that we’re invited to join an event called FAM Trip Journalist. Yan Arief got the news from Pak Octo Lampito from Kedaulatan Rakyat, the biggest newspaper in Jogjakarta. Anyway, what is FAM Trip?

A FAM (familiarization) is a trip offered to meeting professionals (including planners, journalists and travel agents) in which event venues and destinations highlight–and, thus, give attendees first-hand experience with–their products. FAMs may be fully or partially sponsored by venues or destinations. (source)

We’re invited as bloggers. Yes, as bloggers. Yan Arief already knew Pak Octo for long time, but I just met him (Pak Octo) when Yan Arief took me to Kedaulatan Rakyat in last February. At that time, we introduced our unofficial TransJogja.NET website. (Read more about it — in Bahasa Indonesia). Luckily, Pak Octo already knew a bit about blogger and he told us that there would be an event that would involved bloggers. Great!

So, on May 20th we had our first trip to Borobudur. We went to Melia Purosani Hotel first to join with other participants for the first time. There were journalist from The Strait Times Singapura, Metro Malaysia, TV3 Malaysia, ASEAN Affairs Thailand Magazine, Bernama (Malaysian National News Agency), Jakarta Java Kini and Hello Bali Magazine, and many more. Other participants already had a short trip few hours before. Later, I found that there were many bloggers, too. For example, Pak Ahmad Suroso from Tribun Batam already has a blog. There, I met Pak Octo and Agung, a journalist from Kedaulatan Rakyat Around 5 PM, our journey was started: to Borobudur Temple. According to the officer from Konferensi Agung Sangha Indonesia, this year Vesak (or Waisak in Indonesian) is very special, because they got the opportunity from the Indonesian govt to hold an event for 24 hours. Before, Borobudur is not open for 24 hours.

In Borobudur, I did not use my camera, even we got permission from the event organizers. There was a small incident — but I believe it was because a miss-communication between the ogranizers (from FAM Trip and Waisak Ceremony Committee). But, after having an explanation from committee, the participants could understand the situation. We went back to Jogja (Melia Purosani Hotel) from Borobudur around 9 PM. After having confirmation about the agenda for next day, Yan Arief and I went back home — after having (another) dinner with teh poci gula batu and jahe gula batu at Angkringan Lik Man.

As bloggers, we’re lucky to have the opportunity to join the event and spread the information about the event using our media: blog. We will publish more stories at My City Blogging Yogyakarta later, and — of course! — we will write them in blogger-style stories. Currently Asia Blogging Network’s server is under maintenance, so I will post my stories here first. We had a great experience from this event. Thank you for the organizers and committee, really appreciate it.
